U.S., EU call on Taliban to end military offensive in Afghanistan

Diplomatic missions to Afghanistan of countries including the U.S. have called on Taliban militants to urgently put an end to their current military offensive in the country, in a joint statement published on Monday. The statement, signed among others by the EU delegation to the country and the office of the NATO Senior Civilian Representative. It said that the ongoing Taliban offensive was leading to civilian casualties, the displacement of people, and the destruction of public infrastructure across the country. “The Taliban’s offensive is in direct contradiction to their claim to support a negotiated settlement of the conflict and to the Doha peace process,’’ the statement said. To fight the menace of prostitution, Gwaram council area of Jigawa has given a 30-day ultimatum for commercial s3x workers to either get married or leave the state. A suit instituted by 12 detained associates of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, against the Department of State Services and its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, will come up for hearing on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, (Sallah day) at the Federal High Court, Abuja, one of the counsels for the applicants, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has said. There was controversy on Sunday over the reported crash of another Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet in Kaduna State. The Nation gathered from a source close to the Airforce that there was no casualty in the accident as the lone pilot of the fighter plane parachuted to safety. But NAF NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the headquarters had not received any operational report of a crash of its aircraft. Those sued in the suit are, the Senate, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan; the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; the chairman and members of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Ayo Akinyelure and the man the CCT chairman reportedly assaulted, Clement Sargwak. The 21km race was won by Hosea Kiplimo who finished the race in 1:02:36 while his counterpart, Rhonzas Kilimo finished second in 1:02:57. The third position went to another Kenyan, Timothy Ronoh, who raced to the finish line in 1:02:59. The women’s race was also won by another Kenya, Sandra Chebet in a time of 1:10:42, with two Ethiopians taking the second and third positions respectively. Gebaynesh Ayele came second and Beyenu Degefa was third with a time of 1:10:52 and 1:11:02. The first Ijebu man to finish the race was Femi Olusanya, a police officer from Ijebu Ode and promised to do better in the next edition.
