U.S., EU call on Taliban to end military offensive in Afghanistan

Diplomatic missions to Afghanistan of countries including the U.S. have called on Taliban militants to urgently put an end to their current military offensive in the country, in a joint statement published on Monday. The statement, signed among others by the EU delegation to the country and the office of the NATO Senior Civilian Representative. It said that the ongoing Taliban offensive was leading to civilian casualties, the displacement of people, and the destruction of public infrastructure across the country. “The Taliban’s offensive is in direct contradiction to their claim to support a negotiated settlement of the conflict and to the Doha peace process,’’ the statement said. Jigawa LG Boss Gives 30 Days Ultimatum To S3x Workers To Leave Or Get Married

To fight the menace of prostitution, Gwaram council area of Jigawa has given a 30-day ultimatum for commercial s3x workers to either get married or leave the state. S3x workers not indigenous to the area will be repatriated to their states. Those indigenous to the area who are ready to give up their business of s3x work should be ready to be married. They are to present names of their suitors before the 30-day deadline. The Chairman of Gwaram, Zaharadden Abubakar, said the “council is ready to take care of the wedding responsibilities of indigenous s3x workers that are ready to give up the trade.” At a meeting with a delegation of Sara community, a popular weekly market in the local government, Abubakar ordered all the commercial s3x workers operating in the area to present names of their clients to the local government authority before expiration of the dateline. A suit instituted by 12 detained associates of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, against the Department of State Services and its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, will come up for hearing on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, (Sallah day) at the Federal High Court, Abuja, one of the counsels for the applicants, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has said. Olajengbesi made this known in a chat with The PUNCH on Sunday. However, a source within the court confided in our correspondent that judges are avoiding the matter because of its sensitive nature. There was controversy on Sunday over the reported crash of another Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet in Kaduna State. The Nation gathered from a source close to the Airforce that there was no casualty in the accident as the lone pilot of the fighter plane parachuted to safety. But NAF NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the headquarters had not received any operational report of a crash of its aircraft. He added that no alpha jet left Yola, Adamawa State, where the jet was said to have taken off to Kaduna for an operation against bandits in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area. Those sued in the suit are, the Senate, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan; the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; the chairman and members of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Ayo Akinyelure and the man the CCT chairman reportedly assaulted, Clement Sargwak. According to a report by The Nation newspaper, Mr Umar filed the suit at the Federal Court in Abuja on July 13 to challenge the “constitutional powers” of the Senate to conduct an investigative hearing on the assault case. He had been caught on camera assaulting Mr Sargwak, a security guard at the popular Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja, following a squabble that ensued between them over a parking space on the premises on March 29. The use of the software, called Pegasus and developed by Israel’s NSO group, was reported on by the Washington Post, the Guardian, Le Monde and other news outlets who collaborated on an investigation into a data leak. The leak was of a list of up to 50,000 phone numbers believed to have been identified as people of interest by clients of NSO since 2016, the reports said. Not all of those numbers were subsequently hacked, and the news outlets with access to the leak said more details about those who were compromised would be released in coming days. The 21km race was won by Hosea Kiplimo who finished the race in 1:02:36 while his counterpart, Rhonzas Kilimo finished second in 1:02:57. The third position went to another Kenyan, Timothy Ronoh, who raced to the finish line in 1:02:59. The women’s race was also won by another Kenya, Sandra Chebet in a time of 1:10:42, with two Ethiopians taking the second and third positions respectively. Gebaynesh Ayele came second and Beyenu Degefa was third with a time of 1:10:52 and 1:11:02. The first Ijebu man to finish the race was Femi Olusanya, a police officer from Ijebu Ode and promised to do better in the next edition. Airtel Ijebu Heritage Half birthed the youngest marathoner ever, 11-year-old Abigael Ogunbowale, who completed the 21km of the race.
