Victor Afam Ogene, has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to come to the rescue of the people of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra state, over the recent flood disaster in the area. Following the overflow of the River Niger and continuous heavy downpour in the riverine LGA prone to flood, several communities have been submerged by flooding and residents displaced. According to Ogene, houses, farms and other businesses in Ogbaru, have been swallowed by the horrendous flood, leaving many people in dire agony, sorry, tears and hopelessness. He named some of the affected communities as Ogwu Ikpele, Akili Ogidi, Obeagwe, Ossomala, Umunankwo, Ogbakuba, Ochuche, Akili Ozizor, Atani, Ohita and Odekpe. This is coming as the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the defunct SARS and other units of the Nigerian Police (IIP-SARS) on Tuesday presented its report to the National Human Rights Commission after the payment of N438 million to 100 victims in the last 10 months. Indian Teacher Allegedly Kills Student For Making A Spelling Mistake (Photo)

A student has been killed by his teacher for making a spelling mistake.  According to the police in India, it has launched a manhunt for the accused teacher who assaulted the low-caste student which led to his death.  The victim, Nikhil Dohre, was beaten up by his social science teacher on September 7 after he made a mistake in an exam. His health deteriorated after that and he was taken to a hospital.  The Class 10 Dalit student who was fatally beaten up by his school teacher in Auraiya, died during treatment in the hospital. It was gathered that the accused fled the area after his student’s death.  On September 24, Nikhil’s father, Raju Dohre, lodged a report in the Achhalda police station against the teacher for not cooperating in the treatment and for using caste-indicative abusive words.  The FIR was registered against the accused, Ashwini Singh, at Acchalda police station and teams have been formed to arrest the accused. Defence ministry secretly meets protesting ex-soldiers

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ibrahim Kana, is currently meeting with the leadership of the protesting ex-military personnel in a secret meeting at the Ship House, at Olusegun Obasanjo Way, in Abuja, according to The PUNCH reports. Senate Passes Bill To Amend CBN Act For 2nd Reading

By Kingsley Okoye Abuja, – The Senate on Tuesday at plenary, passed for second reading, a bill to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act. Leading debate on the general principles of the bill, its sponsor, Sen. Sadiq Umar (APC-Kwara), said the bill was to enable the appointment of a person other than the Governor as Chairman of the Board of CBN. He said the bill was also designed to divest the powers of the board on determining and fixing salaries and allowances of its members. According to him, the bill if passed, will be used to determine consideration and approval of the annual budget of the CBN. Suleiman said the envisaged new chairman of the proposed board of the CBN, would have powers to determine salaries and allowances of members, while the Governor focused on administrative duties of the bank. In her contribution, Sen. Betty Apiafi (PDP-Rivers), called for a holistic amendment of the CBN Act, adding that the CBN governor went out of his way to indicate interest to participate in politics while in office.
