The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, is dead. Afuye, who represents Ikere constituency 1, died on Wednesday around 6 pm at the age of 66 after a brief illness. A member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly who spoke to Tribune newspaper on the condition of anonymity said Afuye was rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) Ado-Ekiti in the early hours of Wednesday after developing complications over undisclosed ailment. Afuye, who was physically present at the inauguration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, on Sunday, did not betray any sign of ill-health at the occasion. Sources in Ekiti disclosed that he also attended plenary on Tuesday before the sudden turn of events on Wednesday. A lawyer, the Speaker was said to have died of cardiac arrest after attempts by medical doctors to save his life failed. Afuye appeared at the inauguration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, on Sunday and was full of life when he accompanied the new governor to inspect some ongoing road projects in the state capital on Tuesday afternoon. UNIBEN Reopens After ASUU Strike, Announces Date

The University of Benin has announced a resumption date.  The university said students are expected to return to school on Sunday in line with the institution’s amended academic calendar after the suspension of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities which lasted for eight months.  A statement on Wednesday by the institution’s spokesperson, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, stated, “The University of Benin Senate has amended the Institution’s 2020/2021 academic calendar and approved Sunday 23rd October, 2022, for students to return to halls of residence. “Lectures are expected to continue on 24th October as the 2nd Semester was truncated for eight months following the recently suspended strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The semester is to run until 23rd December. “Meanwhile, online registration of new students admitted for the 2021/2022 begins on the 2nd of December. “The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, solicited the cooperation and support of staff and students to ensure successful academic activities.”

Zainab Ahmed A budget of N3.36 trillion has been allocated for fuel subsidy in the first half of 2023.  Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, made this known on Wednesday, October 19, in Abuja. Ahmed said the 2023 budget proposal has a deficit of N10.78 trillion. She said the deficit will be funded through domestic and multilateral borrowings and proceeds from privatisation. According to her, of Nigeria’s $102bn debt, 35% is foreign and 65% is domestic, adding that the current public debt is at 23% of the country’s gross domestic product. The minister also said the 2023 budget also factored in 17.16% inflation. According to her, the draft 2023 budget has been prepared on the background of international challenges such as the Russia-Ukraine war and COVID-19 pandemic, adding that revenue generation has been a major challenge to national development in the country. On allocations for critical sectors, Ahmed said the sum of N2.05 triliion was allocated to education and N1.58 trillion for health.
