By Ogechi Okorie Sixteen years after the incident, a court in Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday handed down life terms to four men convicted of abetting a jihadist attack on a resort that left 19 people dead. The court in Abidjan, the country’s commercial hub, found the four “guilty of the deeds for which they are accused and sentences them to life imprisonment,” Judge Charles Bini announced. The March 13, 2016 assault was the first jihadist attack in Côte d’Ivoire, one of West Africa’s economic powerhouses. Three men wielding assault rifles stormed the beach at Grand-Bassam, a resort town 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of Abidjan popular with Europeans, before attacking hotels and restaurants. The 45-minute bloodbath ended when Ivorian security forces shot dead the three attackers. The 19 people killed comprised nine Ivorians, four French citizens, a Lebanese, a German, a Macedonian, a Malian, a Nigerian and a person who could not be identified. By Chris Udochukwu The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has recommended the suspension of Drambi Vandi, the trigger-happy Assistant Superintendent of Police who killed a Lagos-based lawyer, Bolanle Raheem. Raheem was shot dead on Christmas Day by Vandi who was attached to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah. The cop and his team were said to have tried to stop Raheem and her family members as they drove back home from a church service. Senate Amends 2022 Appropriation Act

According to the Upper chamber, the amendment of the 2022 Appropriation Act is to ensure the implementation of key capital projects in the act which have not been funded as of this time. The Senate it is expedient that the capital budget be extended to prevent the problem of abandoned projects. Meanwhile, the Senate has passed the 2022 Supplementary Budget. President Muhammadu Buhari sought the passage of N819.5 billion Supplementary budget to be financed through additional domestic borrowing. The supplementary budget is to address food security following devastating floods across the country, as well as Damages to road infrastructure and water sector. The supplementary budget is to be funded by additional borrowing and will increase the budget deficit to 8.17 trillion naira. Nigerian govt to announce salary increment for civil servants

The Nigerian government will soon make pronouncements on salary addition for civil servants. The government is considering a raise due to the rising cost of living caused by inflation. Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige addressed reporters at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday. Ngige announced that a Presidential Committee on Salaries had embarked on a review of current pay. The advisory group is expected to come up with salary adjustments early next year. The committee is working with the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. The Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola said in a statement that the intervention has become imperative to prevent further exposure of attendees particularly kids at the venue to prevent accidents that can lead to injuries and fatalities.
