A former Newcastle and Chelsea star Christian Atsu, who was trapped under debris during a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey. has finally been rescued. The quake that has been termed to be the biggest to strike Turkey and Syria in nearly a century killed over 4,800 people on Monday, sparked frantic rescues and was felt as far away as Greenland. The 7.8-magnitude early morning quake, followed by dozens of aftershocks, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions who have fled Syria’s civil war and other conflicts. Atsu had been reported missing alongside his club Hatayspor, sporting director Taner Savut, following the disaster. In an interview with journalists, club’s vice president Mustafa Öza revealed that the 31-year-old had been rescued but was nursing injuries in a hospital but gave grim news about Savut.” Christian Atsu was taken out with injuries. 2023: Obi leads new poll, Tinubu favourite among silent voters

A new poll by Stears Nigeria has shown that the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi is at 41% lead ahead of the February 25 election. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party are following closely at 31% and 20%, respectively. However, 36% of the respondents remained silent when asked who they would likely vote for. Stears, in a poll released on Tuesday, stated that “poll covers 6,220 respondents across Nigeria’s 36 States, making it the largest telephone-based electoral poll in Nigeria.” However, the model used by Stears also shows that Tinubu will win the election in the event of a low turnout of voters. The former Lagos State governor will get 39% of the votes, while Obi and Atiku are to get 32% and 22% of the votes respectively. The pollsters noted that “Stears prediction model believes that Tinubu has the most silent voters i.e. people who intend to vote for Tinubu but choose not to disclose this during an interview.”

By Chris Udochukwu The Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has committed the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, to prison for disobeying a court order. The court also directed the Inspector General of Police to effect Bawa’s arrest and remand him in Kuje prison for the next 14 days until he purges himself of the contempt. Justice Rukayat Ayoola of the Kogi State High Court, in his judgement on Monday, granted the application for committal to prison of the EFCC chairman for disobeying a court ruling delivered on November 30, 2022, wherein the EFCC chairman was directed to produce the applicant in the case, Ali Bello. Counsel to the applicant, Sumaila Abbas, had dragged Bawa to court for arresting and detaining Bello illegally, with the court ruling in his favour, only for the EFCC to arraign him for alleged money laundering three days after the ruling.
