10th Assembly Speakership: Reps Move To Impeach Gbajabiamila

By Chris Udochukwu Outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, may be impeached from office ahead of the inauguration of the 10th Assembly for doctoring the House standing rules to favour his stooges as Speaker and Deputy. Already, over 100 aggrieved members of the House have signed a notice of impeachment to be served on the Speaker at the resumption of plenary Tuesday Morning. Tuesday’s session promises to be hot as members have vowed to raise the issue on the floor of the House for immediate retraction of the rigged and doctored document. 7 Ibadan men docked for beating Inspector Okoro to death

Seven men who who allegedly beat a police Inspector Augustine Okoro to death at a checkpoint in Iseyin Road, Moniya area of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State were arraigned in court on Tuesday. The suspects are Sarafa Lateef (30), Saminu Ibrahim (28), Oloso Sikiru (36), Fatai Yusuf (45), Moruf Olanrewaju (42), Isiaka Rafiu (40), and Anuoluwa Akinola (32). They were arraigned for conspiracy and murder. The prosecutor, ASP Amos Adewale, told court that the defendants conspired on April 25 somewhere on Iseyin Road, Moniya, Ibadan, and caused the death of one Insp Augustine Okoro (43). He added that the accused beat and stoned Insp Okoro to death while the deceased was conducting stop-and-search routine duty in the area. The offence, he said, contravened the Criminal Code of Oyo State 2000. Chief Magistrate E. A. Idowu of Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court who did not take the plea of the accused for want of jurisdiction, ordered their remand at the Agodi correctional facility. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reacted to the Supreme Court judgement, which affirmed his victory as the winner of the July 16 gubernatorial election in the state. Adeleke said he will commit to more expanded delivery of good governance. The governor stated this following his victory at the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Recalled that the apex court had dismissed the appeal by the immediate past governor of the state, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, challenging Adeleke’s victory. In a judgment delivered on Tuesday by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court ruled that Oyetola predicated all his allegations against the election on baseless and unfounded hearsay. Kalu withdraws from race, to become Speaker after APC’s decision

The lawmaker representing Bende federal constituency in Abia State, Benjamin Kalu, has withdrawn from the race to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives. This comes a day after the official announcement of the zoning formula by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 10th National Assembly. Kalu, however, has declared his intention to run for the Office of Deputy Speaker. In a statement by his media aide, he said: “I believed this position was ideal for the Southeast region, as it has not produced a Speaker in the last 40 years. ”However, as a firm believer in Party supremacy, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for the Speakership Position and fully accept the nomination for the position of Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly in line with the directives of our Party the All Progressives Congress (APC).” APC has endorsed Godswill Akpabio as Senate President and Jibrin Barau as the Deputy. Again, Supreme Court Upholds Adeleke’s Victory As Duly Elected Governor Of Osun State

The Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside the appeal by Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Osun State Governor. The apex court, in its judgment read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, also upheld the Appeal Court’s judgment which upheld the election of Adeleke as the state governor. The apex court held that the appellant failed to adduce enough evidence to prove his allegation of over voting in the July 16, 2022 governorship poll. The judgment was affirmed and adopted by the entire five members of the panel. According to all the members of the panel, the appeal lacked merit. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Adeleke the winner of the poll, saying he scored 403,371 votes to sack Oyetola who was the then incumbent with 375,027. However, Oyetola and his party had alleged irregularities in the polls and challenged Adeleke’s victory at the Tribunal. Security Assistance: US Announces $1.2b In New Military Aid For Ukraine

The United States on Tuesday announced a new $1.2 billion security assistance package for Ukraine to boost the country’s air defenses and provide it with additional artillery ammunition. The package underscores the continued US commitment to Ukraine “by committing critical near-term capabilities, such as air defense systems and munitions, while also building the capacity of Ukraine’s armed forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression over the long term,” the Defense Department said in a statement. The assistance comes in the form of Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds, which pay for the procurement of equipment from the defense industry or partners rather than providing equipment from existing US stocks. Gunmen abduct couple in Osun

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a couple along the Ode-Omu-Gbongan road in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State.  Eyewitnesses revealed that the couple were kidnapped on Monday, May 8, 2023 around 5 am at Oogi Ojudo town. The couple were travelling from Lagos to Osogbo, where they went to purchase some goods when the kidnappers swooped on them and whisked them into the bush. The husband reportedly escaped from the kidnappers’ den, while the wife remains in captivity.  Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident said that the police were on the trail of the kidnappers. “I assure you that search and rescue operations have commenced and the police personnel are on the trail of the kidnappers,” the PPRO added.

APC suspends 14 members over alleged anti-party activities in Kaduna

The Afaka branch of the All Progressives Party (APC) in the Igabi local government of Kaduna State has suspended 14 members for alleged offences bordering on anti-party activities. A statement jointly signed by the Afaka ward chairman, Mr Auwal Adamu, and the secretary, Ismail Yahaya, and made available to journalists in Kaduna stated that the committee has deterred them from participating in all party activities in the party in the Afaka ward and also suspended them for being members of the party in Afaka.
