Dr Idris Abdulaziz, an Islamic scholar and Chief Imam of Dutsen Tanshi Jumaat mosque, has been remanded in a correctional centre. A Bauchi magistrate court has remanded him for alleged disturbance and inciting public unrest. His lawyer, Barrister Umar Hassan said the judge denied him bail and ordered that the defendant should be kept in detention and returned to court on Tuesday, May 16.  Abdulaziz turned himself in to the police following calls for his arrest after a comment he made during a Ramadan sermon was interpreted by some section of scholars to translate to blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

Social Media Must Be Regulated To Kill Fake News – Keyamo, Others Insist

The minister of state for Labour and Employment, Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN, has talked about some ways in which fake news could be curbed. Keyamo, spoke through his special adviser, Niyi Fatogun in a media workshop on ‘Balancing Ethics and Patriotism: the obligations of journalists to their country’, organised by the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa. The minister pointed out that although social media has come to stay in the country, there must be laws put in place to regulate and sanitise the system. He said to kill fake news, which according to him, can destroy the fabric of the country, fake social media accounts must first be killed. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Nigerian lawyer, has faulted the decision of the police to place singer Seun Kuti in handcuff. The police also shared his photos on ten toes while in handcuff. The federal government has been told to review the National Youth Service Corps scheme. Prof Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, urged the Federal government to either provide the resources to continue to mandate participation in the National Youth Service Corps scheme or otherwise make it voluntary. Jega made the call during his address at the Opening Ceremony of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the NYSC earlier on Monday in Abuja where he was the guest lecturer. He added that the service must be retained but must also be repositioned to provide a substantial impact on national development, or else it will not last another ten decades.  “If Nigeria wants to do mandatory youth service for all graduates, then Nigeria must provide resources to do just that. Don’t Allow Emefiele Leave Nigeria – Governor Matawalle Tells Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has been told not to allow Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to leave the country. The Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle said this while kicking against the purported study leave granted to the CBN Governor.  It was speculated that the President had approved the request of the CBN governor to proceed on study leave. France Ready To Train Ukrainian Fighter Jet Pilots—Macron

Paris, – Hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron said the country would train Ukrainian fighter jet pilots, but he would not send the planes. “We have opened the door to train Ukrainian pilots. “The trainings can start from now. ”Several European countries had decided it was now necessary to start training,” Macron said. Zelensky made the surprise trip to France on Sunday, on the heel of visits to Germany and Italy. A Ukraine-France joint statement said new supplies would be prepared to address the most pressing and immediate needs to strengthen Ukraine’s defences. Ukraine’s Supreme Court President Suspected Of Taking Bribes

Kiev, – Anti-corruption campaigners in Ukraine alleged that Supreme Court president, Vsevolod Knyazev was caught receiving three million dollars in bribes. Local media in Kiev reported that other Judges of the top judicial body were being raided. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) published a photo of bundles of banknotes on a couch. NABU and the Special Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that they had uncovered “large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court. In particular a scheme to obtain undue advantages by the leadership and Judges of the Supreme Court. Knyazev was installed as chairman of the Supreme Court in October 2021. Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly promised a more determined fight against the culture of bribes that is widespread in the country.
