The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has claimed that Nigerians would have voted for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, during the February 25, 2023 general election, if he was a better candidate. Wike spoke on Wednesday while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme. The ex-Governor of Rivers State said he supported President Bola Tinubu, the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the expense of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the keenly contested poll. Wike claimed he doesn’t discuss presidential candidates any longer. However, he said, “I don’t discuss presidential candidates any longer; I discuss the economy, the president, what he has to offer. “If he (Obi) would have been better, Nigerians would have voted for him.”

More than 70 dead as fire engulfs five-story building in South Africa

A house fire that engulfed a five-story building, has killed more than 70 people, including children, in central Johannesburg on Thursday. The South African emergency services disclosed this on Thursday, noting that another 52 were injured in what is on track to become one of the deadliest fires worldwide in recent years. An official said bodies were discovered piled up at a closed security gate, preventing people from escaping the blaze. City authorities said affected buildings in a deprived, crime-ridden area had been turned into illegal housing after being abandoned. Rwanda retires 12 generals, Cameroon reshuffles officers

The Rwandan and Cameroonian governments have reshuffled their military in what is believed to be a reaction to the recent coups in Niger and Gabon. According to a Rwandan national newspaper, News Times, the Federal Government approved the retirement of 12 generals and several officers. The publication stated that the retirements were announced on Wednesday, August 30, in a statement issued by Rwanda Defence Force. Among those retired include two four-star generals, James Kabarebe and Fred Ibingira, two three-star generals, Charles Kayonga and Frank Mushyo Kamanzi. Kabarebe and Kayonga have previously served as Chief of Defence Staff of RDF, while the other two have been service chiefs previously. The statement partly reads, “The President has also approved the retirement of 83 senior officers, six junior officers and 86 senior noncommissioned officers, 678 whose contracts ended and 160 medical discharges.” In Cameroon, President Paul Biya has also reshuffled the military with new appointments. The owner of the social media platform X, Elon Musk, has announced plans to add video and audio call features to the app. In announcing the development on Thursday, Musk disclosed that the new features will not require the use of a mobile number.
