Federal Government Initiates Legal Action Against 36 Governors Over Local Government Autonomy

The Federal Government has instituted a legal action against the governors of the 36 states of the federation at the Supreme Court over alleged misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas. The suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is seeking full autonomy for all local government areas in the country. In suit, the Federal Government specifically prayed the court to issue an order, prohibiting state governors from embarking on unilateral, arbitrary and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected local government leaders. The governors of the 36 states were sued through their respective Attorneys General. The suit is also asking for an order permitting the funds standing in the credits of local governments to be directly channelled to them from the federation account in line with the provisions of the constitution as against the alleged unlawful joint accounts created by governors. Kano Abuzz with Joy as Emir Sanusi Holds Talks with District Heads

There was a jubilation in Kano on Sunday when Muhammadu Sanusi, Emir of Kano, met with district heads. He was said to be serenaded with adulation and jubilation when he ventured outdoors from the main palace on Sunday. He rode on a royal horse and gesticulated at the crowd who responded with: “You’re the only Emir we know.” He also met with some district heads, council members, vigilantes, women groups and well wishers who were at the palace to pay homage. Precise Post recalls that the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, made a comeback as Emir on Thursday after Abba Yusuf, Governor of Kano, signed the new Kano Emirate Council Law. The law repealed the 2019 version, which balkanized the Kano emirate into five jurisdictions and was relied upon to depose Sanusi as Emir in 2020. Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismantled a four-man kidnap gang and arrested four suspects in military uniforms while setting two victims free from their abductors. While parading the suspects, the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara, vowed to rid the state of all criminal elements in his quest to make Akwa Ibom safe for visitors, tourists and investors. The CP, who spoke through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, explained that the suspects were caught in the act and rounded up by operatives who swiftly responded to distress calls. “The Command received distress calls giving notification of a kidnap incident at Utang Street by Gibbs Street, Uyo. The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Etinosa Aiguokun, who allegedly killed his 74-year-old father, simply identified as Pa Aiguokun, and his wife, Mrs Roseline, with a pestle. The incident happened last Wednesday at Evbomore community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the State during a disagreement, which led to a physical attack.In the course of the physical attack, the suspect was alleged to have run into the kitchen, took a pestle and smashed his 74- year-old father’s head in the sitting room. Tragic as flood kills 10 family members in Afghanistan

Ten members of a family were killed overnight in a village in the capital of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province due to heavy rainfall and flooding, local officials said on Sunday. Rescue teams are searching for the remaining victims after four bodies were recovered, the head of the information and culture department Zabihullah Amiri said in a statement. There are no reports of survivors from the family. Flooding has deepened Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian crisis, adding to the death toll caused by multiple natural disasters in recent years. The World Food Programme, WFP, said in a statement that floods in the past few weeks have affected at least 80,000 people in the country. FG drags governors to Supreme Court over LG issues

ABUJA (SUNDIATA POST)- The Federal Government has dragged the 36 state governors to the Supreme Court over alleged misconduct in the handling of local government affairs Mr Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation, instituted the action against the governors to seek full autonomy for local governments as the third tier of government. According to Fagbemi, the suit is a deliberate attempt at removing local governments from gross abuse by the state governors. In the suit marked SC/CV/343/2024, the AGF is praying the apex court for an order prohibiting state governors from unilateral, arbitrary and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected leaders for local governments. The governors were sued through their respective State Attorneys General. The suit is predicated on 27 grounds among which are that the Nigeria Federation is a creation of the 1999 Constitution with the President as head of the federal executive arm of the Federation who has sworn to uphold and give effects to the provisions of the Constitution. Obaseki begins payment of N70,000 minimum wage in Edo

BENIN- The  Edo Government said it has begun payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage to workers in the state in fulfillment of the promise to increase the minimum wage from May, 2024. It would be recalled that Gov.  Godwin Obaseki had during the inauguration of the Labour House in Benin, announced the increment in workers’ salaries in the state from N40,000 to N70,000. 2 kidnapped Kogi varsity students killed

LOKOJA- The police command in Kogi on Sunday confirmed the killing of two of the abducted students of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH),Osara. The State Police Commissioner, Mr Bethrand Onuoha, said this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja. Onuoha described  the killing by their abductors as very unfortunate.
