By Ogechi Okorie ABUJA – The Inter-Parliamentary Union(IPU) has named President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio as a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament 2025. A statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, Jackson Udom, said that Akpabio’s nomination was contained in a letter signed by the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong and addressed to the Senate President. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has requested the amendment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly rules to accommodate more emergency items. Incidentally, the proposal has been accepted for consideration alongside others such as raising awareness of the International Court of Justice provisional measures for Israel in relation to Palestinians in Gaza; the need for urgent action on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza; the immediate release of the hostages in Gaza and the parliamentary diplomacy for peace in Palestine moved by some countries as the authors. Some other proposals also tendered for consideration were a call for urgent action regarding the conflict in the Middle East; Free, fair and transparent elections without prohibitions aimed towards an orderly and peaceful democratic transition in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela; and the call for urgent action to end the aggression and massive violations of human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Akpabio Raises Nigeria’s Voice at IPU

By Ola Awoniyi The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, attended the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the first time in October last year as head of Nigeria’s delegation. The session was held in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. At the event, Akpabio was elected member of the Executive Committee of the influential global organization. His election was a triumph in international diplomacy for Nigeria. The last time that Africa’s largest democracy enjoyed such privilege was 60 years ago, in1964 when Nwafor Orizu was Nigeria’s Senate President. Akpabio, who spoke at the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Related Meetings, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday, maintained that parliamentary diplomacy is quite critical to achieving peace in the world and resolving conflicts.
