Alibaba’s CEO on Monday said he will fire a manager accused of rape, and condemned an “ugly forced drinking culture” as one of China’s most famous firms faces public outcry over the scandal. Sexual assault has got increasing attention in China recently, with celebrities — including Chinese-Canadian superstar Kris Wu, who was accused of rape — facing investigations and legal charges. In the latest high-profile allegation, an unidentified employee at e-commerce giant Alibaba accused her manager and a client of sexual assault during a work trip to eastern China, according to media reports. She was allegedly made to drink and later sexually assaulted. Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang issued an internal memo to staff — seen by AFP — condemning the attack and his own company’s initial handling of the complaint. He said internal investigations found the accused had confessed to “intimate acts” with the woman while she was inebriated, violating company policy. “He will be fired and never be rehired,” he said, adding the issue was now with the police. Zhang also hit out at an “ugly forced drinking culture”, …

Economic Sabotage: Presidency says threat unnecessary

Abuja –  The Presidency has frowned at threats by a group, Niger Delta Avengers, to bomb nation’s oil installations unless their demands including restructuring of the federation were met by the Federal Government within 90 days. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, condemned the threats in a statement in Abuja on Sunday. He noted that the media was on Sunday awash with reports on the threats and demands by the group to embark on economic sabotage through bombing of critical oil and gas installations unless certain demands, including development of the Niger Delta, and restructuring of the Federation, were met. The presidential aide stated that such threats were unnecessary and uncalled for as President Muhammadu Buhari had since engaged the leadership of the Niger Delta and Ijaw National Congress (INC), on how best to address the demands of the group. Adesina, therefore, expressed shock and surprise over the threats as President Buhari had only met with the concerned stakeholders of the Niger Delta in the Presidential Villa less than 48 hours ago where …

NDDC board: Akpabio’s efforts to stop Tompolo’s deadline fails

Efforts by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio to prevail on a former dreaded militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo, to withdraw his ultimatum for the inauguration of a board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has hit a brick wall. Tompolo has warned of consequences if after seven days beginning from May 30th, Akpabio and the Federal Government failed to inaugurate the substantive board for the commission. Various militant groups had backed Tompolo by issuing similar deadlines and vowing to cripple all oil installations in the region at the expiration of the ultimatum. The agitation to inaugurate the board gathered momentum following the #Occupynigerdelta protest organised by the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) led by Peter Timothy Igbifa. Igbifa, the President of IYC and members of his executive committee were said to have suspended the protest for marathon meetings with the Ijaw National Congress (INC) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. But Akpabio reportedly sent emissaries led by a former IYC President and Special Assistant on Youth Matters to NDDC Sole Administrator, Udengs Eradiri, to Tompolo’s representatives in …

COVID-19 Palliatives To Senators: Ojougboh Urges NASS to Discountenance Report

…Denies Issuing Statement By Chris Udochukwu Abuja (Precise Post) – The Acting Executive Director (Projects) of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Dr Cairo Ojougboh, has denied issuing any statement to the effect that the commission paid various sums of money as COVID-19 palliatives to members of the Senate. He stressed that there was no way the agency could have made such payments as there was no provision for such in the NDDC’s budget and urged the Senate and the National Assembly to discountenance the report. This is also as he has assured them of the IMC’s cooperation to strengthen the NDDC and make it worthy to meet its obligations to the region. While stating that he would have resisted such a payment if it was brought up, the executive director said the Interim Management Committee (IMC) has championed a campaign to cleanse the NDDC of obvious corruption and frivolous payments. According to him, the IMC has a mandate to restore the agency to its core mandate of facilitating the sustainable development of the Niger Delta region. The full statement from …

NDDC: Nwauju Accuses IMC of Embarking on Contract Award Spree

….Faults Elongation of Tenure of Interim Management Committee By Our Reporter Abuja (Precise Post) – The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission has been accused of embarking on a contract award spree even when such contracts have no social impact on the people in Niger Delta. National Coordinator, Niger Delta Rights Advocates, Darlington Nwauju, who made the allegation, also faulted the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to elongate the tenure of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) instead of putting in place a substantive board. Are you worried that President Buhari just extended the IMC tenure amid allegation of contract racketeering? According to him, the President was misinformed into taking this decision. “If you look at the trend of things, how and when that decision or announcement came, you could link it to the pressure mounted on the Interim Management Committee (IMC), and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs for the N5.4b contract for the supply of COVID-19 medical consumables and Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). I listened to a programme on Channels Television when NDDC’s acting Executive …

Akpabio, Omo-Agege In Text Message War Over NDDC Board

By Sentry Abuja (Precise Post) – The forensic audit of the accounts of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari when some Niger Delta leaders visited him at the Presidential Villa recently has left the regions leaders divided. While the move did not go down well with certain interests in the region, others see it as one that is long overdue. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, for instance, is firmly in support of the move because he believes that the Commission is nothing but a conduit pipe for siphoning funds. As far as he is concerned, there is nothing on the ground to justify the huge sums that have been invested in the Commission over the years. But some members of the National Assembly are opposed to it and are making all the moves they can to frustrate it. While Sentry will keep readers posted on the issue, what is of utmost concern at the moment is the SMS war that has erupted between the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the …

Senate Confirms NDDC Board Nominees

•Okays new CJ for FHC, NIC president By Deji Elumoye in Abuja Abuja (Precise Post) – Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of 15 members of the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), rejecting, however, one other nominee, Dr. Joy Nunieh. The upper legislative chamber also confirmed the nominations of a new Chief Judge for the Federal High Court and President of the National Industrial Court (NIC). Nunieh, a nominee from Rivers State, was declined confirmation by the Senate due to her failure to appear for screening before the Senate committee on Niger Delta, which screened the nominees last week. This was sequel to the presentation of the report of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta which recommended the rejection of the nominee out of the 16 nominees screened by the committee for the Commission’s board. The committee on page 18 of its 19-page report stated that “Dr. Nunieh, representing Rivers State on the Governing Board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), was absent and could not be screened; her nomination is therefore not recommended for confirmation.” After …

NDDC Audit: Forensic Experts Advise FG to Constitute New Board

Oluchi Chibuzor Abuja (Precise Post) – As more Nigerians continue to applaud President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering the forensic audit of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) from 2001 till date, some forensic experts have advised the president that only an independent audit supervised by persons who had not been part of the commission would be adjudged credible and objective. They gave the advice in separate interview with THISDAY. According to an auditor, who is currently a Research Fellow at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Elisha Jones, given that the forensic audit was being conducted to examine NDDC’s financial records to derive evidence which can even be used in a court of law, and seeks to uncover incidents of corruption, the interim management of the Commission should be asked to step down immediately, while the new Board already announced by the President should assume duties and supervise. This, he argued, would ensure fairness and transparency. Jones, pointed out that, “without prejudice to the current management it was reported in the media that they had secretly interviewed and was set to …
