By Our Reporter Abuja (Precise Post) – Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan has been appointed chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). ECOWAS disclosed the appointments in a statement published on its website after a two-day meeting which ended on May 25, 2021, in Ghana. As special envoy, Jonathan had helped ECOWAS to facilitate dialogue with all principal stakeholders in Mali’s leadership crisis. According to Jonathan’s media office, the former president’s mediation efforts led to the release of the interim President of Mali, Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane, by the country’s military. While Jonathan was appointed chairman, former Executive Secretary of the Mano River Union of Guinea, Madam Hadja Saran Daraba was named vice-chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise – a supportive organ with a mandate to bring peace and stability among member states. The meeting is at the instance of the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS and President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo. This was contained in a statement released via the official twitter handle of the Presidency. Prior to the Extraordinary Summit, the President had met with the Special Envoy and ECOWAS mediator in Mali, former President Goodluck Jonathan, who briefed him on the latest developments in the country following his meeting with key political actors in the West African country. Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator: WHO Appoints Okonjo-Iweala Special Envoy

By Simon Akwu Abuja – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appointed former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Special Envoy for the newly inaugurated Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. She is to serve alongside British business executive, Sir Andrew Witty in the same capacity, to mobilise international commitment to the initiative, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, made the announcement during the launch of the ACT Accelerator  via webinar from Geneva. “I would especially like to thank Sir Andrew Witty and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for agreeing to act as Special Envoys for the ACT Accelerator,” Ghebreyesus said in his remarks. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said on her Twitter handle @NOIweala yesterday that she felt “Honoured and humble to serve with Sir Andrew on this challenging and vital global endeavour.” The initiative is an international collaboration aimed at accelerating the development, production, and equitable distribution of COVID-19 drugs, tests kits, and vaccines around the world. This is the fourth international assignment given to Okonjo-Iweala in less than two months.
