ABUJA (PRECISE POST) — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Demicratic Congress(NDC), Peter Obi, has called for greater investment in teachers and the education sector, saying the quality of Nigerian teachers will largely determine the country’s human capital and future development.
Obi made the call in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday to commemorate the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
He described teaching as one of the most important professions in any society, noting that teachers do more than impart knowledge as they shape minds, nurture character and prepare the next generation of citizens, professionals and leaders.
According to him, the quality of teachers would, to a great extent, determine the quality of Nigeria’s human capital and ultimately the future of the nation.
The former governor commended Nigerian teachers for their resilience, dedication and sacrifices, particularly those made under difficult socio-economic conditions.
Obi urged governments at all levels to do more to improve teachers’ welfare, ensure prompt payment of salaries and provide conducive working environments and adequate teaching tools.
He stressed the need to restore the dignity of the teaching profession, describing it as critical to Nigeria’s development.
Obi said Nigeria could not effectively tackle the challenges of out-of-school children, unemployment, poverty and underdevelopment without deliberate and sustained investment in education.
He therefore called for education to receive greater priority in national planning and budgeting, with particular attention given to teachers and educational infrastructure.
“To every Nigerian teacher, I thank you for your service and for continuing to build our nation, one child at a time. Please remain steadfast and hopeful,” Obi said.
The two-term governor of Anambra state expressed optimism that the Nigeria desired by citizens was achievable, stressing that building such a country must begin with investment in its people.
“With improved education, a new Nigeria that will be okay if possible,” he added, while wishing Nigerian teachers a happy World Teachers’ Day.
