ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially commenced full implementation of its Go Cashless Programme at the access gates of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), in line with the Federal Government’s directive on cashless transactions.
The new system, which took effect today, is aimed at streamlining toll payments, improving transparency, and reducing the risks associated with cash handling at the nation’s busiest airports, the statement released on Sunday via the official X handle of FAAN @FAAN_Official said.
However, the first day of implementation witnessed significant traffic build-up at the access gates of both airports.
According to FAAN, the congestion occurred as many motorists chose to register for their Go Cashless cards at the gates despite extensive prior publicity, notices, and repeated announcements urging early registration.
The surge in on-the-spot registrations placed pressure on toll lanes, leading to temporary gridlock.
FAAN acknowledged the inconvenience experienced by airport users, noting that while some initial adjustment challenges were anticipated with a major system transition, adequate notice had been given to encourage motorists to register ahead of the rollout.
Expressing empathy over the situation, the Authority outlined immediate steps taken to ease congestion. These include the deployment of additional personnel to the access gates, the creation of more registration points to accelerate first-time card issuance, and enhanced on-ground coordination to improve traffic flow.
FAAN appealed to motorists for patience, understanding, and cooperation as efforts continue to stabilise and streamline the process.
The Authority emphasized that the transition is designed to deliver long-term benefits, including faster processing times, improved accountability, reduced cash-related risks, and a more efficient airport environment.
Motorists who are yet to obtain their Go Cashless cards have been urged to take advantage of the expanded registration support and to plan ahead for future visits.
Precise Post recalls that FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and world-class airport experience, expressing confidence that with public cooperation, the cashless transition will soon become seamless.
