ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable victory over Mali in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
D’Tigress, under the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama, clinched the title on Sunday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
According to statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker,
House of Representatives, Musa Abdullahi Krishi made available to Precise Post on Monday, this latest triumph marks a historic seventh Afrobasket title for Nigeria, and a record-breaking fifth consecutive win in the tournament, a feat unmatched by any other African nation. The team has now remained unbeaten in Afrobasket competitions since 2015.
Speaker Abbas, visibly elated by the team’s performance, described the victory as a proud moment for the nation. He noted that D’Tigress’ success came shortly after another milestone by Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, who recently secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
“The D’Tigress have once again shown that Nigerian women possess the strength, courage, and excellence to drive positive change,” Speaker Abbas said. He further emphasized that their achievement strengthens his resolve to continue advocating for gender equality and increased female representation in politics and governance.
As he extended his heartfelt congratulations to the team, the Speaker urged Nigerians to celebrate and honour D’Tigress upon their return to the country with the coveted trophy.
