ABUJA- The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called for strengthened collaboration with the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) to address key infrastructural challenges within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
During a courtesy visit to the AMMC office in Abuja, NUJ FCT Chairperson, Ms. Grace Ike, and her executive team presented several pressing issues related to the welfare of journalists and the state of union facilities.
AMMC Coordinator, Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, responded with a strong commitment to support the union’s initiatives for the FCT’s development.
Obuah acknowledged the critical role the media plays in disseminating information about AMMC’s activities, a function that he emphasised was vital to ensuring that the FCT master plan was adhered to.
He voiced his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “I am indeed very happy to partner with the NUJ FCT.
“Together, we can achieve our core mandate, support each other, and work towards infrastructural development in the FCT, in line with the master plan for the nation’s capital city.”
While Obuah noted the financial constraints faced by AMMC, he assured the NUJ of his office’s willingness to support their causes.
He also pledged to present the NUJ FCT’s requests to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, further underlining the importance of the media in fostering growth and development across all sectors.
“We will do everything possible to contribute to the growth of the union in line with the FCT master plan,” Obuah affirmed.
He also congratulated Ike for becoming the first female chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, wishing her a successful tenure.
Ike used the occasion to highlight several infrastructural challenges facing the union, including the incomplete Pentagon building and the insufficient space for monthly congresses, which currently accommodates fewer than 2,000 journalists.
She, however, said the union’s most ambitious proposal was the establishment of a “Journalists’ Village,” aimed at providing affordable housing, professional facilities, and a conducive working environment for journalists in the FCT.
“This initiative is vital for offering affordable housing, professional facilities, and a conducive environment that will enhance the welfare and productivity of journalists who play a critical role in our democracy,” Ike stressed.
She expressed confidence that with AMMC’s collaboration, the necessary resources, land, and policy backing could be secured to bring the vision to fruition.
Ike also took the opportunity to commend Obuah for his exemplary leadership in managing the city’s infrastructure and municipal services, as well as his support for workers’ welfare.
She said Obuah’s efforts earned him the “Employee’s Advocate of the Year” award.
“I must commend your leadership efforts in ensuring proper maintenance and sustainable management of the city’s infrastructure, utilities, and services,” Ike said.(NAN)
