ABUJA (PRECISE POST) — Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a substantial salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the move as a major morale booster that will strengthen the country’s fight against insecurity.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Lawan said the new salary structure, which provides increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for military personnel across various ranks, reflects the President’s commitment to improving the welfare of the nation’s armed forces and rewarding their sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
He described the decision as “a masterstroke of compassionate and strategic leadership,” noting that the welfare of military personnel remains critical to maintaining a motivated and effective fighting force.
According to the former Senate President, the package is equitable and carefully structured, with junior personnel—including Privates, Lance Corporals, Corporals, Sergeants and Staff Sergeants—receiving an 80 per cent salary increase in recognition of the enormous risks they face in combat operations.
He noted that officers from the rank of Warrant Officer to Colonel will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while senior officers up to the rank of General will receive a 30 per cent adjustment, describing the arrangement as a comprehensive recognition of every level of the military command structure.
Lawan observed that the implementation of the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, will raise the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion investment in the country’s security sector.
He said the improved remuneration would positively impact the morale of about 250,000 military personnel by providing them with the psychological and financial support needed to confront the country’s complex security challenges.
While applauding the Federal Government’s commitment, the Senate Defence Committee Chairman challenged members of the Armed Forces to reciprocate the gesture through greater dedication, discipline and operational excellence.
“I urge the Nigerian Armed Forces to respond to this gesture with intensified rededication and commitment to operational efficiency,” he said.
Lawan also stressed the need for stronger collaboration among the nation’s security agencies, insisting that modern security threats require seamless coordination rather than isolated operations.
He called on the Army, Navy and Air Force to deepen joint operations, intelligence sharing and strategic cooperation, saying the era of inter-service rivalry and operational compartmentalisation must give way to a unified security approach.
“The complex nature of today’s threats demands that we do not just fight as individual services, but as one unified, lethal and professional force,” he stated.
He expressed optimism that the enhanced welfare package would serve as a catalyst for a more coordinated offensive against criminal elements and insurgents, leading to the restoration of peace across troubled parts of the country.
Lawan further assured that the Senate Committee on Defence would continue to support the Armed Forces through adequate legislative backing and robust security appropriations to ensure they have the resources required to defeat threats to national security.
He concluded by thanking President Tinubu for recognising the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel, describing the salary increase as a well-deserved investment in those who risk their lives daily to defend the nation.
Troops of the Nigerian Army under the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have killed three terrorists and recovered a number of weapons during an operation in Kadam Forest in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation was carried out by soldiers from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Battalion 7 alongside the 8 Division Strike Team.
This was made known in a statement released on Monday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.
The statement explained that the troops achieved a major breakthrough after confronting a well-known terrorist group connected to the Lakurawa terrorists operating in the area.
The Army said the operation began after security agencies received reliable intelligence that more than 100 terrorists had gathered inside Kadam Forest to plan attacks and kidnappings in nearby communities.
The intelligence also revealed that the terrorists were moving kidnapped victims to their hideouts.
“Troops of the COAS Special Intervention Battalion 7 in conjunction with 8 Division Strike Team, operating under the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have eliminated terrorists at Kadam Forest recording a significant operational success following a decisive engagement with a notorious terrorist network affiliated with Lakurawa Terrorists in Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto State.” The statement said
The Army said the troops immediately moved to stop the suspected terrorists once the intelligence was received.
“The operation was initiated following credible intelligence indicating that over 100 terrorists had converged deep within Kadam Forest to coordinate attacks and kidnapping on local communities and transport their kidnapped victims to their strongholds. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, troops mobilised to intercept the terrorist advance. Contact was established at approximately 1200 hours.” The statement added
The statement said a heavy exchange of gunfire later took place between the soldiers and the terrorists during the operation.
“The ensuing firefight was fierce and sustained. When the terrorists attempted a rear-flanking manoeuvre, troops responded with superior firepower, effectively neutralising the threat and maintaining tactical dominance throughout the engagement.” The statement added
After the gun battle, the troops carried out further searches in the forest to determine the outcome of the encounter.
“Subsequent exploitation operations into the forest confirmed the neutralisation of three terrorists, with several others believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during their escape. Troops recovered one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, 350 rounds of PKT ammunition,111 rounds of 7.62 Special,3 magazines, 2 radios, 3 motorcycles and a mobile phone.
Follow-on operations are ongoing to confirm additional enemy casualties and recover further materiel.” The statement noted
The Army also said the soldiers involved in the operation remain highly motivated and ready to continue the fight against terrorist groups in the region.
“Troop morale remains high, with fighting efficiency assessed as strong and unwavering. This operation demonstrates the continued effectiveness of intelligence-driven, joint security operations in degrading terrorist networks and disrupting their sustainment capabilities.” The statement said
The statement further noted that more patrols and offensive operations are ongoing in the area to build on the success of the operation and stop fleeing terrorists from regrouping.
“Aggressive patrols and sustained offensive operations continue across the general area to exploit this success, disrupt fleeing terrorist elements and prevent their regrouping.” The statement concluded.
AKURE- The Police Command in Ondo State says a coordinated inter-agency raid on Sunday led to the arrest of 99 suspects involved in various criminal activities across the state.
DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Akure.
Jimoh said the joint effort involved the Police Command in Ondo State; 32 Brigade Artillery of the Nigerian Army; and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command.
“Other security agencies are the Directorate of State Services (DSS); and Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps.
“The intelligence-led operation targeted identified criminal hideouts, black spots, and flashpoints across several parts of the state known for criminal activities.
“The coordinated operation resulted in the arrest of 99 suspects linked to offences such as armed robbery, burglary, theft, cultism, and other related crimes.
“During the operation, several items suspected to have been used for criminal activities as well as suspected stolen properties and other incriminating exhibits were recovered from the suspects.
“The arrested individuals are currently undergoing screening and profiling, while those found culpable will be charged to court accordingly,” He said.
The spokesperson said the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Adebowale Lawal, commended the professionalism, synergy, and commitment displayed by all participating security agencies during the operation.
According to Jimoh, the CP noted that such collaboration remains crucial in the fight against crime and criminality within the state.
“The CP further reiterates the command’s unwavering commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven policing and joint security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and maintaining law and order in the state.
“Lawal, once again, warns criminal elements to desist from engaging in unlawful activities within the state, stressing that Ondo State will not serve as a safe haven for criminals,
“Security agencies will continue to intensify operations to identify, track, and decisively deal with offenders regardless of where they operate or attempt to hide,” the spokesperson said.
He, therefore, called on the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely, credible and actionable information.
” Community cooperation remains vital in sustaining the prevailing peace and security in the state.

ABUJA- Troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army have rescued 14 kidnapped victims in Kogi following sustained offensive operations against terrorists within forest enclaves around Lokoja axis.
A credible military source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Tuesday that the rescue followed a successful assault on Batijjo’s camp in the Adonkolo/Kakanda Forest.
The source said that the troops engaged terrorists in a firefight and overran the camp, forcing the criminals to flee.
He said the troops recovered weapons, ammunition, military and police camouflage, and documents, including a foreign passport during the operations, further degrading the terrorists’ operational capability.
According to him, one of the rescued victims was identified as a serving soldier abducted while traveling from Abeokuta to Zaria, while all rescued persons were stabilised by medical teams.
”In a follow-up ambush at Tajimi, troops engaged a fleeing terrorist who abandoned his motorcycle before escaping; the motorcycle was recovered for intelligence exploitation.
”Troops also responded swiftly to a kidnapping incident along the Okene–Onyukoko road, rescuing seven escapees, as search-and-rescue operations continue for remaining victims,” he said.
The source reaffirmed the Nigerian army’s resolve to sustain aggressive operations to dismantle terrorist networks and restore security across Kogi and adjoining areas. (NAN)
ABUJA- Troops of Sector 7, Operation Safe Haven (OPEP), in collaboration with the Zango Kataf Police Area Command, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Forest Guards and local hunters, have rescued eight kidnapped victims at Badurum Kasa Forest in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
A security source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the operation followed actionable intelligence on the kidnappers’ hideout.
The source said the combined team mobilised to the area at about 4:23 p.m. on Wednesday and made contact with the criminals at about 5:59 p.m., forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into the surrounding bushes.
“All eight victims were rescued unharmed and have been reunited with their families,” the source said.
Those rescued include Mrs Rashida Musa (19), Mrs Hafsat Nuhu (18), Mr Zakari Saleh (52), Miss Hasiya Yahaya (13), Mr Ahmed Yahaya (14), Mr Ibrahim Saiba (11), Miss Salma Yahaya (14) and Mr Sophan Idris (18).
The source added that follow-up exploitation and pursuit of the fleeing suspects were ongoing to apprehend those responsible and dismantle the criminal network. (NAN)
ABUJA- Troops of the Nigerian Army has apprehended 27 suspected illegal miners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and neutralised three terrorists during sustained operations across the country in the last 24 hours.
A credible military source disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said troops of 7 Guards Battalion under Operation MESA raided an illegal mining site at Iddah in Bwari Area Council of the FCT, arresting 27 suspects and destroying the illegal miners’ camps.
According to him, items recovered during the operation included a dane gun, four motorcycles and assorted mining equipment, while troops also mounted roadblocks along the Bwari–Ushafa–Dutse axis.
The source said the terrorists were neutralised during coordinated offensive and response operations as troops maintained pressure on criminal elements across multiple theatres.
In the North-East, he said troops of the Joint Task Force, North-East, under Operation Hadin Kai sustained offensive operations for Operation Desert Sanity V across Sectors 1 to 4.
He added that the troops conducted aggressive patrols and routine activities within their Areas of Responsibility, with no major security breaches recorded during the period.
Similarly, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the source said troops across Sectors 1 to 3 sustained offensive and routine operations, consolidating gains and denying criminals freedom of action.
Under Operation Enduring Peace, he said troops responded to a kidnapping incident at Rantya in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, where a wounded gateman was evacuated to hospital.
In Kaduna State, the source said troops quelled youths unrest at Mabushi village in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, arresting four suspects and restoring normalcy to the community.
“In the South-South, troops under Operation Delta Safe arrested a suspected armed robber in Delta State, recovering a locally fabricated pistol and live ammunition.
“Similarly, in Rivers, troops apprehended two suspected illegal oil bunkers at Bonny Island, recovering drums of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil,” he said.
The source said the Nigerian Army would remain relentless in denying terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action and ensuring the safety of lives and property nationwide. (NAN)
LOKOJA- The Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade Lokoja, under Operation Accord III, in conjunction with Other Hybrid Forces (OHF), has recorded another significant victory in its fight against banditry in Kogi.
The Brigade’s spokesperson, Lt. Hassan Abdullahi, said in a statement on Saturday that a notorious bandit deputy commander, Babangida Kachala, was neutralized on Sept. 11.
The News Agency of Nigeria NAN) reports that notorious bandit commander, Babangida Kachalla, and five others have been neutralised.
“In a bold operation on September 11, 2025, the troops neutralized Babangida Kachala, a notorious bandit and second-in-command to Kachala Bala Shuaibu, the leader of a bandit group operating in the state.
“The operation began with credible intelligence on the movement of bandits within Ofere Forest and Ayetoro Gbede general area, in Ijumu Local Government Area.
“This prompted the combined troops to lay an ambush at a suspected bandit crossing point.
“Although the initial contact was not made, the troops encountered an ambush staged by the bandits while withdrawing to base.
“In the ensuing firefight, the troops engaged the bandits with superior firepower, neutralising one of the criminals.
“During the operation, the troops recovered several items, including: one fully loaded magazine, 31 mobile phones, a blood pressure machine, packs of Tramadol tablets, Fetish charms, and N16,000 cash.
“The troops observed bloodstains at the scene, suggesting that several other bandits escaped with gunshot wounds.
“Subsequent intelligence confirmed that Babangida Kachala was among those who fled with gunshot wounds and was later confirmed dead,” Abdullahi said.
The Nigerian Army reassured the good people of Kogi of its determination to restore lasting peace and security.
The Army encouraged citizens to provide timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations.

ABUJA- The Nigerian Army has arrested one of its personnel for alleged gunrunning, even as troops rescued eight kidnap victims and recovered arms and ammunition in recent operations across the country.
A credible source at Army Headquarters disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
He said the soldier, identified as Lance Cpl. Saifullahi Garba (14NA/72/15972), was arrested in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State with 711 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
According to the source, preliminary findings showed that the soldier had been accumulating the ammunition from clearance operations with the intent of supplying terrorists.
“He has since been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
The source also confirmed that troops in Bama intercepted terrorists’ logistics movement and recovered 379 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
He added ambush operations by troops in Borno and Yobe led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 11 rounds of ammunition and other items, with one terrorist neutralised.
In the North-Central, the source said troops rescued three more kidnap victims in Nassarawa, in addition to five earlier rescued.
He said the troops of Operation Whirl Stroke recovered 579 rustled cattle and two AK-47 rifles from armed herdsmen responsible for earlier attacks in Taraba.
In the South-South, the source said the troops of Operation Delta Safe arrested 10 armed suspects in Rivers disguised in OSPAC uniforms.
According to him, troops seized five pump-action rifles, locally made guns, charms, mobile phones and ₦1.7 million cash, while a separate raid in Ahoada East neutralised two cult leaders.
“These operations demonstrate both the army’s resolve to deny terrorists and criminals freedom of action and its vigilance to deal decisively with any betrayal within the ranks,” he said. (NAN)
JOS- The Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) has handed over 220 small arms and light weapons recovered by its troops to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms.
Maj.-Gen. Folunsho Oyinlola, Commander of OPSH, handed over the weapons to the centre on Sunday in Jos.
Oyinlola, who is also the General Officer Commanding 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, said the arms were seized during various operations.
“The operational successes recorded by troops of OPSH led to the recovery of 220 small arms and light weapons from criminal elements,” he stated.
He said the cache included 84 den guns, 66 locally fabricated revolver rifles, 27 AK-47 rifles, eight locally made AK-47s, one submachine gun and one automatic pistol.
Other arms included 20 locally fabricated pistols, four cartridge pistols, two revolver pistols, one pump action gun, four double-barrel rifles, among others, he added.
According to him, troops also recovered 1,567 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 218 rounds of 7.62mm ball, and 56 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.
He further listed 24 rounds of 5.56mm, two rounds of 12.7mm, six rounds of 0.44mm, 83 cartridges, and one 7.62mm blank round.
Oyinlola said the handover aligned with the mandate of the centre, which was established by the Federal Government in 2021 to curb illicit arms circulation.
He urged the public to support government efforts to eradicate illegal weapons and promote a safer and crime-free society.
The commander commended his troops for their efforts and urged them to remain resilient, professional, and committed in the fight against insecurity.
Receiving the weapons, retired DIG Johnson Babatunde, Director-General of the centre, praised OPSH for its consistent efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms in society.
Represented by Mr Abdul Eneche, Deputy Director-General of the centre, Babatunde recalled that OPSH had also handed over a substantial cache of arms in 2023.
He said such measures would greatly aid efforts to address the pressing security challenges confronting the nation.
“Virtually all the threats in the country – terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry – are fuelled largely by the spread of small arms.
“The more OPSH continues with this effort, the more it reduces the problem. I commend the operation for this giant stride,” Babatunde said.
He urged all arms-bearing and law enforcement agencies across the country to emulate OPSH in curbing the proliferation of light weapons in society. (NAN)
JOS- Maj.-Gen. Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, Jos, has decorated seven newly promoted officers with their new ranks.
The seven officers were recently elevated from the ranks of Second Lieutenants to Captains of the Nigerian army.
The GOC decorated the officers in an event organised on Friday night at the Cantonment.
Speaking, Oyinlola, urged them to be more dedicated and committed to their duties as military officers.
The GOC urged them on professionalism and meeting the expectations that come with their new ranks.
“You must remain dedicated to your duties, because the military pays close attention to career prospects and professional development.
“You must maintain a high standard of regimentation and discipline; these are crucial roles of the military,” he said.
Oyinlola also tasked the newly decorated personnel on self-development and prudent management of their finances.
The GOC, who called on Nigerians to support the military in their bid to safeguard the nation, thanked the families of officers and soldiers for standing in the gap while their spouses serve the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the newly promoted officers, Capt. Umar Isah, thanked Lt.- Gen Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for finding them worthy of promotion.
He pledged their unwavering commitment to duties and upholding the trust placed on them by the Nigerian army.

ABEOKUTA- The troops of 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala , Abeokuta, deployed under Operation MESA has intercepted 88 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice during patrol.
Capt. Samuel Akari, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of 35 Artillery Brigade, disclosed this in a statement in Abeokuta on Saturday.
Akari explained that the interception followed an intelligence report on the movement of contraband goods into the country.
He noted that the interception occurred at 4:00am on Thursday at Rounder- Imasayi road in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state.
“The drivers who fled upon sighting the troops, were conveying the goods in two unregistered Mazda saloon cars .
“Also, a Ford bus without registration number that was abandoned on the road was also seen with the contraband goods.
“The intercepted items and the three vehicles have been handed over to Custom Ogun 1 Area Command for further action,” he said.
Akari stated that the handover of the items underscored the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Army, particularly 35 Artillery Brigade, to support the relevant government agencies.
He reiterated that it was important to collaborate in the enforcement of anti – smuggling laws and to safe guard national economic interest. (NAN)
ENUGU- The Nigerian Army has advised residents of Enugu State not to panic upon witnessing heavy movement of troops and equipment, or hearing gunshots, between March 17 and March 20.
Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, gave the advice in a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday.
According to Unuakhalu, the activity is part of a week-long range classification exercise by Nigerian Army personnel.
“In line with the Army Headquarters Training Directives for 2025, the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army will conduct its first range classification exercise of the year from Monday, March 17 to Thursday, March 20, 2025.
“The range classification will take place at the Army Training Area in Udi Local Government Area (LGA), located just outside the Enugu metropolis.
“The exercise is designed to sharpen the shooting skills of officers and soldiers in the Division, as well as assess the serviceability of weapons that have not been deployed in operations,” he added.
Unuakhalu further assured the public, especially residents of Ogbede, Ukehe, Umoka, Affa, Ochima, and Onyohor communities in Udi LGA, that there was no cause for alarm.
He urged them not to panic on sighting heavy movement of troops and equipment or hearing gunshots during the specified dates.
“Additionally, locals are advised to stay clear of the range area throughout the exercise, as it will involve the use of live ammunition,” he said.

ABUJA- The National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, says that violent extremism remains one of the most complex security challenges that threatens Nigeria’s national security.
Laka stated this at the opening of the Workshop and Validation Meeting on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) Guidelines and Strategic Communication Plan on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that violent extremism had also threatened the very fabric of Nigerian communities, institutions, and social cohesion.
Laka said that the workshop highlighted their unified determination to enhance the nation’s capacity to counter violent extremism and to ensure the seamless implementation of PCVE strategies at every level of governance.
He said the Federal Government of Nigeria had developed the Policy Framework and National Action Plan for PCVE to serve as a guiding strategy for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach in tackling radicalisation and violent extremism.
According to him, a policy is only as effective as its implementation, and that is why we are gathered here today, to ensure that we take deliberate and strategic steps toward localizing and operationalising this framework.
“Over the course of these two days, we will focus on the domestication and localisation of the PF-NAP for PCVE.
“This will be done through exploring strategies to integrate PCVE principles into the operational frameworks of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as at the state and local government levels.
“We will also identify existing gaps, challenges, and opportunities for institutionalizing PCVE efforts across various sectors.
“For the validation of the PCVE Guidelines and Strategic Communication Plan, we will conduct a thorough review of the draft PCVE Guidelines to ensure they align with national priorities, security realities, and international best practices.
“Furthermore, we will validate the draft strategic communication plan, taking cognisance that effective messaging is crucial in countering extremist narratives, fostering positive community engagement, and ensuring that our responses remain proactive, and evidence based,” he said.
The Director of PCVE at NCTC, Amb. Mairo Musa, said the main objectives of the workshop was centered around enhancing the understanding of the policy framework on preventing and countering violent extremism and facilitating its localisation at institutional state and community levels.
Musa said that effective implementation requires domestication, ownership, integration within existing government agencies and security structures.
She said it was to also assess, refine and validate the strategic communication plan to align with the evolving security landscape and leverage effective messaging to counter extremist narratives and promote peace-building efforts.
According to her, it is also to foster cross-sectional collaboration and information sharing, strengthening multi-sector stakeholder synergy in PCV implementation.
Musa said it was expected that the outcome would strengthen understanding of the PCV-PFNAP amongst MDAs at the state, institutions and other stakeholders with clear strategies for its localisation and institutionalisation.

ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Army Council has approved the promotion of 108 senior officers to the next ranks of Major General and Brigadier General, respectively. A total of 35 Brigadier Generals were promoted to the rank of Major General, while 73 Colonels were elevated to the rank of Brigadier General accordingly.
The announcement was contained in a statement released on the official X account of the Army Headquarters in a statement signed by the Director Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu on Saturday.

The Army Council has on 19 Thursday, December 2024, approved the promotion of senior officers to the next ranks of Major General and Brigadier General, respectively. A total of 35 Brigadier Generals have been promoted to the rank of Major General, while 73 Colonels have also been elevated to the rank of Brigadier General accordingly.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, while congratulating the newly promoted senior officers and their families, also charged them to redouble their efforts to justify their elevation and the confidence reposed in them. He further tasked the newly promoted officers to lead their subordinates by example and evolve “out of the box” ideas and innovations to speedily tackle contemporary security challenges bedeviling the nation. He added that they must remain committed to their oath of allegiance to defend the nation at all times and maintain unalloyed loyalty to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

ANAMBRA, NIGERIA – The House of Representatives on Thursday expressed grave concern over excessive security checkpoints along the Onitsha-Enugu expressway and extortion of commercial drivers plying the route.
Worried by the development, the House called on all the Security Agencies to reduce the number of checkpoints and ensure that security operatives act within the bounds of the law and do not use their positions to harass or exploit Citizens.
The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Amobi Oga who solicited for the House intervention.
lawmakers expressed the grave concern over the current approach of mounting excessive security checkpoints is counter-productive and undermines the economic stability of the region.
In his lead debate, Hon. Ogah said: “The House is fully aware that, the security Agencies, in Nigeria that are mostly involved in mounting of security checkpoints on our major Roads include: the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC). It is also aware that the distance between Onitsha to Enugu is approximately 105 kilometers only.
“It is disturbing that, in a journey of 105km there are approximately 28 security checkpoints that is at an average of 3.7km each. For example, Awkuzu Junction, Amawbia Junction, Ugwuoba Boundary, Oji River Junction and Onyeama Hill just to mention but a few. These subject travelers to constant harassment, delays and extortions of different sort in addition to other inconveniences.
“The House note that, the mounting of numerous checkpoints along expressway violates the constitutional rights of Nigeria citizens to free movement as enshrined in section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“It is also a direct affront to the dignity of the people particularly in the South-East, where such levels of militarization are more pronounced.
“It is worrisome, that these security checkpoints appeared to be more of a tool for harassment than a genuine effort to ensuring security, nothing that ordinary citizens, especially commercial
drivers are often forced to pay bribes at the checkpoints to avoid delays or harassment.
“This is having detrimental effects on the socio-economic life of the region by causing delays, constant interruptions, increase in cost of transportation, goods and services which altogether discourage economic activities and
investment.”
While calling for redress, Hon. Ogah maintained that: “in as much as security is important, the current approach of mounting excessive security checkpoints is counterproductive and undermines the economic stability of the region.
“We advocate the use of modern and more efficient methods of maintaining security that do not subject the people to undue hardship or violate their constitutional fundamental rights.”
To this end, the House mandated the joint Committees on Defence, Army and Police Affairs to dialogue with the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to explore alternative Security Strategies that will not subject people to undue hardship.
The House also mandated its Committee on Road Safety to dialogue with FRSC Corp Marshal with a view to regulate the number of its checkpoints on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.
In the same vein, the House mandated its Committee on National Security to engage its relevant Agencies and advocate for community-based security initiatives and improved intelligence gathering which would effectively address regional security
concerns other than the use of excessive security checkpoints on the expressway.
Hence, the House mandated the joint Committees of Defence, Police Affairs and National Security should intensify strict oversight to ensure that security operatives act within the bounds of the law and do not use their positions to harass or exploit Citizens.

Pa Tajudeen Lagbaja, the head of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja’s has expressed regret obtaining Nigerian Defence Academic (NDA) form for the deceased.
Pa Tajudeen, the younger brother of the late COAS’s father, stated that he would not have bought the form had he known it would lead to his death.
Some family members also alleged that Lt. General Lagbaja may have been killed through diabolical means due to a land dispute in his hometown.
According to TheNation, In 2023 a dispute arose in Ilobu, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area in Osun State, when representatives of the Nigerian Army planned to establish a hospital in the community.

Pa Tajudeen told TheNation that he initially obtained the NDA form for the late Lieutenant General.
“Everyone who is born must die. We give glory to God. The year that I obtained NDA form for him, if I had known that he would die before me, I would not have done so. I regret obtaining the form for him. But it is destiny.
“The death that killed Taoreed Lagbaja ought to take me. I took him as one of my children. We are greatly bereaved, we are sad. He constructed a borehole in his father’s compound and other places in the community.
“We can never forget him, his death is so shocking to us. I have accepted the fate, all the promises he made to me have hit a brick wall. He always gave us hope in the family, despite the sorrow, I give thanks to God,” the family head said.(Daily Trust)
