ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, describing the feat as a strong endorsement of his leadership and Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration.
A statement issued by the State House on Friday through the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu praised Adeniyi’s overwhelming endorsement during the WCO’s 147th and 148th Council Sessions held in **Brussels>, saying it reflects the remarkable transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service and the increasing international recognition of its reforms.
According to the President, Adeniyi’s re-election validates the progress recorded under his leadership, including efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, modernise customs administration and position Nigeria as a leading voice in global customs affairs.
Tinubu said his recent decision to extend Adeniyi’s tenure as Comptroller-General was driven by the need to sustain the ongoing reform agenda within the Service, adding that the international customs community had now affirmed that decision through its unanimous endorsement.
He described the re-election as both a personal honour for Adeniyi and a recognition of Nigeria’s growing stature in international customs administration.
The President commended the Customs boss for introducing bold reforms that have improved revenue generation, strengthened border security, facilitated legitimate trade and modernised customs operations through homegrown innovations such as the B’Odogwu platform.
Tinubu expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s second term as WCO Council Chairperson would deepen international cooperation, promote secure and efficient global trade, and further enhance Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
He also noted that the ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Customs Service are contributing significantly to the Federal Government’s economic reform agenda by improving trade efficiency, enhancing border governance and promoting greater transparency in customs administration.
According to him, the Service’s innovation-driven approach, improved border management, stronger trade facilitation measures and enhanced institutional efficiency are advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda while boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness in global commerce.
The President further praised the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, the expansion of non-intrusive inspection technology, strengthened collaboration with other government agencies and the Service’s continued alignment with international customs standards.
He said these initiatives have reinforced the Nigeria Customs Service’s reputation as a modern, efficient and globally respected institution committed to facilitating legitimate trade while protecting the nation’s borders.
Tinubu wished Adeniyi a successful second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council, expressing optimism that his renewed global mandate would strengthen international customs cooperation and sustain the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service in support of Nigeria’s economic development goals.
