A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday affirmed that Martin Amaewhule and the 26 other members of the State House of Assembly who are loyalists of former governor Nyesom Wike are still members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The 27 lawmakers had announced their defection to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC in December 2023. Nigerian highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has lost his father, Elder Onyemaechi Okoli. The ‘Ijele’ crooner announced the sad news via his X (formerly Twitter) handle. Israel-Palestine War Death Toll Hits 35,173

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Tuesday that at least 35,173 people have been killed in the territory during more than seven months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants. Woman dies after car breaks loose from tow truck, crushing her

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Anambra State Sector Command, has confirmed the death of a woman in an accident at Okpoko Market on the Asaba-Onitsha Road. The Sector Commander, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, who confirmed the accident to journalists in Awka on Thursday, said the woman was hit while she was crossing the road. He said that the accident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved a commercial tow truck with registration number XA550BMA. “Eyewitness reports reaching us indicate that the truck was towing a vehicle at an uncontrollable speed along the axis. “The vehicle that was being towed got detached from the tow truck. “It hit and killed a female adult, who was said to be crossing the road while the tow truck continued its movement. “FRSC rescue team came to the scene and took the woman to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, where she was confirmed dead and her body deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” he said. The mother of the three children who suffocated to death last Sunday in the capital of Kwara State, Ilorin, Shade Silifat Abdulkadir, has spoken out about the horrific event. The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has described the death of Olabode Olawuyi as agonising, especially coming from a lion he has been feeding for the past nine years. Policeman killed as serving senator, Ndubueze narrowly escapes death in Imo

Unknown gunmen have attacked the residence of Senator Patrick Ndubueze, the lawmaker representing the Imo-North senatorial district (Okigwe zone). It was gathered that the unfortunate incident occurred on Monday when the armed men invaded the lawmaker’s residence in Umualumoke and began shooting sporadically. The attack led to the killing of one police officer, the senator’s orderly. On Tuesday, a Turkish court convicted the son of Somalia’s president in the killing of a motorcycle courier and sentenced him to 2 1/2 years in prison. The sentence, however, was quickly reduced to a fine. Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was charged with “causing death by negligence” after a diplomatic car he was driving hit Yunus Emre Gocer on a highway in Istanbul on Nov. 30. An arrest warrant was issued for Mohamud after Gocer died six days later, but the president’s son had already left Turkey. Mohamud reportedly returned to Turkey last week to testify about the accident. The arrest warrant and a travel ban imposed on Mohamud were revoked after he gave a statement to court officials, and was then released, the DHA news agency reported. On Tuesday, the Istanbul court convicted Mohamud, who was not present, of the charge of negligent death and ruled that he be fined 27,300 Turkish lira ($910). His driver’s license was revoked for six months. Prosecutors had requested that Mohamud be sentenced to up to six years in prison. The Police Command in Ogun says a couple, Mba Moses and Florence Moses, have allegedly killed one Mark Kalu after the victim sustained injuries from a fight between them. Man bags death sentence for setting his mother ablaze

Stephen Jiya, who killed his mother by setting her on fire, has been sentenced to death by hanging by Chief Judge Halima Abdulmalik of Niger State. Mrs Abdulmalik ruled that Mr Jiya was found guilty of culpable homicide punishable under Section 221 of the penal code law, which attracts the death penalty. He was arraigned by the office of the Attorney General of the State Ministry of Justice for the murder of his mother, Comfort Jiya, a retired director in the Niger State Ministry of Education in December 2021. He was arraigned on 14 September 2022 and the trial started on 23 November 2022. The judge said the prosecution provided evidence and witnesses that established that the convict committed the offence. She said the prosecution has proved its case against the defendant beyond every reasonable doubt. In January 2022, the suspect killed his mother and subsequently confessed to the crime. He told the police that he killed her after he suspected she was behind his wife’s disappearance from their Suleja home.
