Ibadan, Nigeria – A major road safety incident occurred on Wednesday night when a diesel tanker carrying 50,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) lost control and crashed near the Jin-Jofes Filling Station along Iwo Road in Ibadan, Oyo State. One person sustained minor injuries.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement released Thursday morning. He said the truck skidded off the road at a sharp bend, spilling its flammable content into a nearby gutter.
According to Akinwande, the Fire Service received a distress call at 8:07 p.m. from a concerned resident, Mr. Adisa Kazeem. Firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Adeniyi Adesina, were immediately deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, a DAF tanker with registration number T17657LA (Lagos) was found overturned in a gutter, with diesel spilling rapidly,” Akinwande stated.
Fire personnel acted swiftly, deploying chemical foam compounds to neutralize the flammable spill and prevent a potential explosion or fire outbreak.
The accident was attributed to the driver losing control while negotiating a sharp turn. Fortunately, both the driver and the motor boy survived the crash. The motor boy, however, sustained a minor shoulder injury and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement officers, including members of the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps, were on the scene to secure the area and restore normal traffic flow.
The Oyo State Fire Service urged drivers of heavy-duty vehicles to exercise greater caution, especially on roads with sharp bends, to prevent similar incidents.
