Nigerian musician and activist Seun Kuti has opened up about his family’s long-standing pain over the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that no other family in Nigeria suffered under Buhari’s rule as deeply as his did.
In a candid video shared on his Instagram page, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti reflected on the difficult years when Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State. Seun recounted how his father and uncles—Beko and Koye Kuti—were subjected to severe persecution and maltreatment during Buhari’s regime.
“There’s nobody Buhari has offended and damaged like my family. Buhari dealt with my family, but his death is not any type of justice or victory for my family,” Seun Kuti stated.
Seun expressed sadness that the men he deeply admired—his father and uncles—all passed away long before Buhari’s death. He noted that, despite the pain, Buhari’s passing offers limited consolation.
“My only regret is that my dad, Fela, and my uncles, Koye and Beko, died before him; all better men than him. The only solace I can take from his death is that the three of them will gang up against him in the afterlife if there’s such a thing,” he added.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London at the age of 82, faced widespread criticism during and after his time in power, with many recalling his authoritarian policies and human rights abuses from his military rule between 1983 and 1985.
Seun Kuti’s statement has resonated widely online, sparking fresh conversations about the legacy of Buhari’s government and the generational wounds still felt by victims and their families.
