YENAGOA (PRECISE POST) – In a calm display of diplomacy and cultural pride, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, hosted the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, to a banquet in Yenagoa on Wednesday night, marking the envoy’s official visit to the state.
The evening event, held in honour of the Ambassador and his delegation, featured a rich cultural presentation by the award-winning Bayelsa State Council for Arts and Culture, Governor Diri anounced on his official X handle.
“The troupe delivered a captivating performance that showcased the heritage and traditions of the Ijaw people, fulfilling the Governor’s earlier promise of a memorable cultural experience.”
Welcoming Ambassador Mignot once again, Governor Diri acknowledged the long-standing and cordial relationship between Bayelsa State and the European Union, highlighting past EU interventions that have positively impacted various communities in the state.
In his brief address, the Governor expressed appreciation for the EU’s support, particularly in the areas of peacebuilding, youth development, and security.
He reaffirmed Bayelsa State’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with the EU in these key sectors.
As a gesture of goodwill and recognition of the growing partnership, Governor Diri conferred honorary citizenship of Bayelsa State on Ambassador Mignot. The ambassador was also bestowed with an Ijaw name, Ibe-tariowei, which translates to “lover of the people.”
Precise Post recalls that the ceremony was attended by government officials, traditional leaders, and members of the diplomatic community, reflecting Bayelsa’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships through cultural diplomacy and mutual respect.
