MAIDUGURI- The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Maiduguri has expressed its unwavering commitment to continuing to honour its veterans in recognition of their sacrifices and contributions to the service.
The Air Component Commander, Air Commodore Umar Idris, made this known during the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar’s parley with veterans on Saturday in Maiduguri.
Idris, who was represented by Wing Commander Abdulkarim Ibrahim, said the event had brought the veterans and the serving personnel to honour a shared legacy and reaffirm the enduring bond between generations of airmen and airwomen.
“This initiative was a clear demonstration of the Nigerian Air Force’s enduring commitment to honoring the invaluable contributions and sacrifices of our veterans; ‘the true pillars of our heritage’.
“As I look around this hall, I am reminded of the rich legacy and proud history of the Nigerian Air Force.
“Many of you present here today played pivotal roles in shaping our Air Force into the formidable institution it is today.
“Your selfless service, acts of courage, and unwavering dedication laid the foundation upon which we continue to build.
“We are honored to walk in your footsteps and strive daily to uphold the legacy of professionalism, excellence, and patriotism that you so valiantly established,” the air component commander said.
He said that the meeting had offered them an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable milestones the Nigerian Air Force had achieved from defending the national airspace to contributing to international peacekeeping efforts and internal security operations.
“These accomplishments are a direct result of the standards you set and the values you instilled.
“Your sacrifices and commitment to service have become the guiding light for current and future generations of airmen and airwomen.
“As we navigate the evolving security landscape, we are fully aware that the challenges confronting our nation are both complex and dynamic,” Idris added.
In his closing remarks, the CAS, Air Marshall Abubukar,said the service had over the course of the parley had the privilege of engaging in insightful discussions covering critical areas that affect the well-being, reintegration, and post-service life of its retired personnel.
“These conversations have been not only enlightening but also reaffirming of our collective commitment to ensuring that no veteran is left behind.
“It was indeed heartwarming to witness the presentation of the Chief of the Air Staff’s Honorarium, a humble but sincere token of appreciation for your uncommon sacrifices, unwavering dedication, and distinguished service to our dear nation,” Abubakar said.

Commander 105 Composite Group, Group Captain Kingsley Nwachukwu, said that the veterans’ presence at the event had served as a powerful reminder of where they have come from, and the values that continue to guide them.
“Your stories, insights, and experiences are treasures that we will continue to learn from and preserve.
“As we move forward, let me assure you that the Nigerian Air Force, under its current leadership, remains deeply committed to strengthening support structures for our veterans.
