LASEPA sets to enforce hygiene at restaurants, hotels

LAGOS- The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) says it will start visiting eateries, restaurants, and hotels, to ascertain their level of compliance to regulatory hygiene standards.  The General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Tunde Ajayi, said this during the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) Continuing Medical Education (CME) event, on Monday in Lagos.  The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was held in commemoration of World Family Doctor Day, celebrated annually on May 19 globally.  The theme for this year’s celebration is “Healthy Planet, Healthy People” seeks to draw action for family doctors, healthcare professionals, and communities worldwide to recognise and respond to the health challenges posed by climate change. Ajayi affirmed LASEPA’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws to ensure citizen’s well-being through safe and clean operations that protects public health from food and water borne diseases. Man bags 1 year imprisonment, 100 hours community service for cyber crime

LAGOS- Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday convicted and sentenced a man,  Tunmise Aluko to a one year imprisonment over cybercrime. The court, however, gave the defendant an option of N300, 000 fine, as well as 100 hours of community service. The convict was charged with false statement and impersonation. He pleaded guilty to the charge. Following his plea, the prosecutor, Mrs Chineye Okezie, reviewed the facts of the case, and tendered evidences which were admitted by the court. She then urged the court to proceed and convict the defendant based on his plea and the evidences adduced. In his verdict, Justice Aneke found the defendant guilty of the offence and consequently convicted him. After listening to a plea for mercy on behalf of the convict, the court sentenced him to one year imprisonment, with an option of N300, 000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the items used in committing the offence to the federal government. The prosecutor said that the convict committed the offence between January and March. Railway: Link Itakpe to Abuja– NRC MD urges FG

LAGOS (SUNDIATA POST)- The Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, has urged the Federal Government to link the Itakpe corridor to Abuja to speed up development in the country. Okhiria made the call in Lagos when the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, led by the Chairman, Mr Adeleye Ajayi paid him a courtesy visit. LASEMA in search of man trapped in underground drainage

LAGOS (SUNDIATA POST)- The Search and Rescue team of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) are in search of a man trapped in an underground drainage at Onipanu Bus stop in Lagos. The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, made this known in a statement, on in Lagos. Oke-Osanyintolu said that following an SOS message on distress situation of a drainage worker, LASEMA activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from it’s Onipanu Base. He said that upon arrival of the emergency responders at the incident scene, investigations revealed that an adult male de-silting drainages along that axis in attempts to clear a blocked portion, accessed the underground tunnel and got trapped. He said that further investigation at the incident scene revealed that the man was a Drain Ducks worker employed by LAMATA. Impersonation: Nigerian Army hands over dismissed soldier, 3 others to police

LAGOS- The Police Command in Lagos State says the Nigerian Army has handed over  a dismissed soldier and three others to it over alleged impersonation. The command’s spokesman , SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the handing over to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday. Hundeyin said that an  Army Captain (name not mentioned), attached to Dodan Barracks, Obalende ,brought the four suspects (names withheld), to Onikan Police Division on Friday at about 5.01 p.m. He said that all the suspects were of no fixed addresses, adding  that one of them was dismissed from the Army in 2016. Hundeyin said the suspects were caught  wearing camouflage, T-shirt and face cap of the Nigerian Army. “On interrogation, it was discovered that the suspects frequently committed various crimes using military accoutrements and they equally used them to beat check points. ” Efforts are on to ascertain how they got the army uniforms. LAGOS- The Lagos Water Corporation has announced the sacking of 391 redundant employees as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts. This is according to a statement shared by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s senior special assistant on new media, Jubril Gawat, on his official X handle on Friday. “The Lagos Water Corporation has announced the disengagement of 391 redundant staff as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and meeting the evolving demands of the organization,” the statement said. According to the statement, the move aimed to streamline the workforce in response to the persistent challenge of water scarcity in the state despite extensive infrastructure projects. Dana aircraft with 83 passengers aboard skids off runway in Lagos

LAGOS- Dana Air has confirmed that a runway incursion involving one of its aircraft with registration number 5N BKI, skidded off the runway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Tuesday morning. Making the confirmation in a statement, the management of the airline said it was “relieved to confirm that all 83 passengers and crew onboard the flight disembarked safely without injuries or fear as the crew handled the situation with utmost professionalism. “We have also updated the AIB and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority on the incident and the aircraft involved has been grounded by our maintenance team for further investigation,” it noted. Appreciating the airport authorities and its crew for their swift response in ensuring the safe disembarkation of passengers following the incident, the airline apologised and appreciated the “passengers on the affected flight for their patience and understanding.” The management of the airline reassured its passengers “that their safety will always be our top priority, and we are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

PDP urges Lagos government to repel pension law for ex-governors, deputies

LAGOS- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state has applauded the Abia House of Assembly and Gov. Emmanuel Otti of the state for revoking the pension law for ex-governors and deputies, describing it as a step in the right direction. The state PDP chairman, Philip Aivoji, in an interview with journalists in Lagos on Monday, urged the Lagos state government to emulate Abia in the best interest of the state. Abia Assembly, on Tuesday, passed a bill to stop payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies in the state. Ex-NSCDC commandant calls for mandatory drug test, psychiatric evaluation for prospective housemaids

LAGOS- Paul Ayeni, a retired corps commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has suggested a mandatory psychiatric assessment for every prospective househelps before employment. Mr Ayeni, in an interview with journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, spoke on the need to address the recurring incidents of crimes committed by house helps. According to him, the challenge has often not been paid attention to, as Nigerians still engage people they don’t know as house helps. Mr Ayeni condemned a recent tragic incident in Lagos where a woman was fatally stabbed by her househelp. Lagos thugs impose N100 levy on individuals using pedestrian bridge

LAGOS- Lagos pedestrians carrying heavy luggage are now required to pay a N100 levy before they can be granted access to the Yaba pedestrian bridge.  A viral video on Instagram by Guardian Nigeria on Wednesday showed a thug, on two separate occasions, blocking the access of two women carrying loads from climbing the bridge until they paid the N100 levy he demanded. However, the video also showed other pedestrians without any loads having unhindered access to the bridge. The video was shared with the caption, “In Yaba, Lagos State, individuals are imposing a fee of N100 on pedestrians carrying loads to use the pedestrian bridge, coinciding with the enforcement of laws against jaywalking in Lagos. Mohbad’s autopsy results to be ready in 4 weeks

LAGOS- Dr Richard Somiari, Director of Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, on Wednesday said that results of an autopsy conducted on deceased singer Ilerioluwa Aloba (a.k.a Mohbad) would be ready in the next three weeks or four weeks. Somiari gave the assurance while testifying during a corner’s inquest into the death of the singer. The witness was cross-examined on Wednesday by defence counsel  in the inquest. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the musician died on Sept. 12, 2023,  and was buried the following day. He was aged 27 years. His death generated controversies, prompting Lagos State Government to direct a coroner’s inquest into the death. The inquest, which began on Oct. 13, 2023, is taking place at the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court.
