ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Honourable Uchenna Okonkwo, the lawmaker representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, has declared that Nigerians are poised to reclaim their country, expressing strong optimism about the future of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking at the ADC National Convention, Okonkwo said he was “elated” by the energy and commitment displayed by party members and supporters, describing the gathering as a sign of a growing political awakening.
“I feel elated seeing the power and zeal that has been demonstrated by well-meaning Nigerians who understand that what we currently have under the APC is a hijack of democracy,” he said.
According to him, the convention reflects a deepening resolve among citizens to pursue meaningful political change. He noted that Nigerians are increasingly aligning with the ADC as a platform for that transformation.
“This convention has shown that Nigerians are standing firmly with this great party. They are ready to take back this country, and that is what we stand for,” he added.
Okonkwo also raised concerns about what he described as the marginalisation of some lawmakers in the National Assembly who chose not to align with the ruling party. He said the ADC now offers such politicians a renewed platform to advocate for democratic ideals.
“We in the National Assembly have been relegated to the background because we refused to join them. But with ADC, we now have a voice to fight for true democracy, not just for ourselves, but for the youth, women, and all Nigerians,” he stated.
Despite alleged threats from authorities, including concerns involving the FCT administration and electoral bodies, the lawmaker said the strong turnout at the convention demonstrated resilience among party faithful.
“Regardless of the threats, Nigerians have shown that this movement will stand. What you see here today is a clear demonstration of that resolve,” he said.
Reacting to whether the ruling party feels threatened by the ADC’s rising profile, Okonkwo questioned what he described as contradictions in its stance.
“They claim to have 32 governors, enormous resources from subsidy removal, control of security outfits, and the support of the youth. So why are they panicking?” he asked.
He concluded that the atmosphere at the convention points to an impending political shift, insisting that the ADC is at the forefront of that change.
“The fear is palpable. Anyone who walks into this hall can see that a big change is coming, and that change is ADC,” Okonkwo said.
