ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) have raised serious concerns over the rising rate of alcohol consumption among minors, warning that sachet and small PET bottle packaging is fueling access to alcohol by underage persons across Nigeria.
Speaking at a joint press briefing on Thursday, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, described underage drinking as a growing public health crisis, citing findings from a 2021 national survey conducted in collaboration with the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN).
According to the survey, which sampled 1,788 respondents across six states representing the country’s geo-political zones, more than half—54.3 percent—of minors and underaged persons purchase alcohol themselves. Nearly half of them obtain alcoholic drinks in sachets and small PET bottles, while others access alcohol through friends, relatives, social gatherings, and even from their parents’ homes.
The findings revealed that sachet and small bottle packaging remains the most preferred option among underage drinkers due to affordability, portability, and ease of concealment. While 54 percent of respondents described themselves as occasional drinkers, 24 percent consume alcohol daily and 11 percent drink at least once a week. Cases of binge drinking were also recorded, with higher prevalence in some states.
Peer pressure was identified as the leading factor driving underage alcohol consumption, followed by parental influence, social media exposure, emotional distress, and the widespread availability of alcohol outlets. Public advertising and weak enforcement of regulations were also cited as contributing factors.
Health experts warn that early alcohol consumption can cause lasting brain damage, impair memory and impulse control, increase the risk of alcohol poisoning, and lead to liver and kidney damage. Studies further indicate that youths who begin drinking before the age of 15 are significantly more likely to develop alcohol dependence later in life.
Beyond health risks, authorities linked underage drinking to rising cases of violence, road accidents, risky sexual behavior, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, poor academic performance, depression, and anxiety among young people.
The agencies referenced recent Senate resolutions urging strict enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages packaged in bottles smaller than 200 millilitres. NAFDAC and NOA pledged to intensify nationwide sensitization campaigns, emphasizing that restricting small, easily concealed alcohol pack sizes is critical to curbing underage drinking and safeguarding the nation’s future.

ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has pledged to spearhead nationwide public enlightenment campaigns to ensure smooth implementation of the Federal Government’s new tax reforms set to commence in January 2026, when the recently enacted Tax Act becomes operational.
Director General of the Agency, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the commitment on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving members of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, led by Chairman Taiwo Oyedele, during a courtesy visit.
According to the statement signed by Bala Musa, Director, Communications and Media of the Agency, Issa-Onilu warned that the ease with which misinformation spreads through digital platforms has empowered individuals to circulate false narratives about the new tax regime. He stressed the need for extensive sensitisation to counter such misinformation and to help Nigerians understand the benefits embedded in the reforms.
According to him, the new Tax Act addresses longstanding concerns such as double taxation affecting companies, business owners, workers and investors. He emphasised that Nigerians stand to benefit significantly once the provisions of the law are fully understood.
The NOA DG highlighted the Agency’s nationwide reach, noting that its offices and trained personnel across all states routinely engage in grassroots mobilisation and public education on government policies. He added that the Agency’s demographic mapping capability enables it to tailor communication strategies to specific groups, including women, youth, trade associations, civil society groups and community leaders.
“In every community, our staff are part of the people. They enjoy trust, and that is an advantage we will deploy,” he said.
Issa-Onilu also underscored NOA’s strong partnership with over 200 radio stations and 36 television stations broadcasting in 72 local languages, noting that this network will be instrumental in ensuring widespread dissemination of factual information. He revealed that the Agency is leveraging modern technology, including the use of Artificial Intelligence, through its recently launched ChatGPT-style platform, CLHEEAN, designed to provide Nigerians with verified information on government policies.
“These are the tools we will deploy to assist and support the committee in sensitising Nigerians on the new tax laws,” he assured.
Earlier, Oyedele stated that the committee visited the NOA to seek collaboration in pushing accurate information to the public and countering widespread misconceptions about the reforms. He expressed concern over misinformation being targeted particularly at grassroots communities, including farmers, with the aim of turning them against the government.
He noted that while the committee has been engaging multinationals, it is equally important for everyday Nigerians—farmers, students, business owners and workers—to understand how the reforms benefit them. “When people are properly informed, they will support the reforms rather than protest against them,” he said.
Both parties agreed to set up a joint committee to ensure effective communication and implementation of the tax reforms nationwide.
The visit culminated in an exchange of symbolic presentations: the Tax Reforms Committee handed over copies of the new Tax Act to the NOA DG, while the NOA leadership presented the National Value Charter plaque to Oyedele.
Precise Post recalls that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Tax Reforms Bill into law in June as part of efforts to simplify and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework.

ABUJA FCT – In a move to avert loss of human lives and property, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has directed the Agency’s Community Orientation Officers to immediately commence a massive sensitisation campaign in communities likely to be affected by the release of excess water from the Lagdo Dam.
Precise Post recalls that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has indicated that the Nigerian government has been notified by Cameroonian authorities that it will soon release excess water from the dam, urging Nigeria to take precautionary measures to prevent damage to property and loss of life.
Recognising the urgency, the Director General instructed state directorates, particularly in the eleven frontline states, to begin ward-to-ward campaigns in all local governments identified as at risk. The affected states include: Kogi, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Anambra, Bayelsa, and Delta, the statement by the Deputy Director, Press, Paul Odenyi said.
In his words, “We will not wait for the floods to deliver the message to our people. They must have all the information needed to make informed decisions, as we have been given this alert from our neighbouring country. What happened two years ago and in 2012 should serve as a lesson to us all.”
“I have instructed our community officers to start ward-to-ward sensitization today in all at-risk communities. The message must be clear, providing safety measures, emergency contacts, floodplain maps, and possible impact points. Coastal communities should be evacuated immediately, while emergency food banks and medical facilities must be established as these communities relocate. We must also ensure that children are enrolled in safer schools without facing any disadvantage.”
The Director General also appealed to state and local governments to take NIHSA’s warning seriously and implement measures to mitigate risks to communities along flood-prone areas. He called for technical support from stakeholders and government institutions with expert knowledge to ensure that “not a single person is displaced or falls victim to the potential floods.”
