There is growing uncertainty within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following reports that the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position. According to sources cited by Igbere TV, the development occurred on Friday amid rising internal pressure and mounting dissatisfaction with his leadership.
Internal Tensions Reach Breaking Point
Ganduje, who took over as APC Chairman in August 2023 after the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, is said to have faced sustained pressure—particularly from stakeholders in the North Central zone—who have consistently demanded that the chairmanship be returned to their region.
Insiders claim the final straw came during the APC’s primary elections for the FCT Area Councils, particularly in Bwari Area Council, which was described by party insiders as “a complete embarrassment.”
According to one source, “The outcome in Bwari was disgraceful. The DPO was seen chasing other aspirants away, leaving only one candidate, Hon. Joshua Musa Ishaku, who is alleged to have ties with the PDP and did not support President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 primaries.”
Leadership Under Scrutiny
Ganduje’s leadership style has reportedly caused deep divisions within the party, with several factions expressing dissatisfaction over what they describe as an increasingly autocratic approach. His inability to effectively manage the party’s internal affairs, especially at the grassroots level, is believed to have accelerated calls for his removal.
A Strategic Reshuffle Ahead of 2027
Sources within the APC National Working Committee (NWC) suggest that the decision for Ganduje to step aside is part of a broader strategy to reposition the party and foster unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. As part of the transition, one of the party’s current national vice chairmen is expected to take over in an acting capacity until a new national chairman is elected at the APC National Convention, tentatively scheduled for December.
Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, has yet to issue a formal statement regarding his resignation. However, if confirmed, his departure would mark another major shake-up in the APC’s leadership structure as the party navigates internal power dynamics and regional balancing demands.
What Next for the APC?
As the ruling party grapples with this leadership transition, all eyes will be on how the APC manages the fallout and whether it can restore cohesion ahead of upcoming political contests. The North Central’s long-standing demand for representation at the highest level of the party is now likely to dominate discussions in the coming weeks.
