The Bayelsa State High Court has directed an immediate trial for 15 domestic staff detained for nearly six years at the Okaka Correctional Centre, Yenagoa, over missing jewellery allegedly linked to former First Lady, Patience Jonathan.
The move follows a rare consensus between the prosecution and defence teams during Thursday’s hearing to fast-track a case long plagued by delays.
“The court proceeded well today, and both parties have agreed to finish the case as soon as possible, with an accelerated hearing. So victory is coming,” a source close to the defence told SaharaReporters.
Arrested in 2019, the accused—mostly former members of Mrs Jonathan’s household staff—have remained behind bars without bail. The case has dragged on for years amid allegations that the delays were deliberately orchestrated by the former First Lady’s private legal team.
A previous investigation revealed that private prosecutors Ige Asemudara and Samuel Chinedu Maduba, representing Mrs Jonathan, had repeatedly used stalling tactics such as presenting witnesses with inconsistent testimonies and requesting extended adjournments.
“One of them comes from Lagos while the second travels in from Port Harcourt. They’ve been handling this case from day one, presenting witnesses who come to tell lies. One witness took almost two years,” said a source familiar with the case.
Another insider claimed the delays were intentional. “The aim is to frustrate the process and keep these innocent people in prison as long as possible. It’s an abuse of the legal system,” the source added.
Tactics allegedly included citing illnesses, unavailable witnesses, and procedural excuses. “Sometimes, Ige Asemudara would claim he is sick or his witness has work. Other times, he just asks for long adjournments,” another person involved in the case stated.
A source disclosed that the presiding judge initially postponed hearing bail applications to “first listen to the prosecution’s evidence,” only to later deny bail entirely on the grounds that the charges were capital in nature.
“When the case started in 2019, they all applied for bail,” the source said. “But the judge told their lawyers to wait so she could hear some evidence. After that, she shockingly denied bail, saying the offences were capital and therefore not bailable.”
In response to the allegations, the Bayelsa State High Court denied involvement in the delays and reaffirmed its commitment to speedy justice. The court maintained that available records show delays were due to the presence of multiple defence lawyers needing to cross-examine witnesses and several adjournments at counsels’ requests.
The 15 detainees—Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Sahabi Lima, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Salomi Wareboka, Sunday Reginald, Boma Oba, Vivian Golden, and Emeka Benson—remain incarcerated without trial or conviction.

Her daughter, Deborah Erema, has been in detention alongside 14 others since 2019, following accusations of jewelry theft made by Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Deborah Erema and the other accused, mostly domestic staff who worked for the Jonathans, were arrested in connection to the alleged theft of jewelry belonging to the former First Lady.
Despite spending more than five years behind bars, they have not been convicted in any court of law, SaharaReporters has learned.
The list of detainees includes Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Sahabi Lima, Emmanuel Aginwa, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Salomi Wareboka, Sunday Reginald, Boma Oba, Vivian Golden, and Emeka Benson.
These individuals have remained cut off from their families, careers, and lives—all under the shadow of unproven allegations orchestrated by someone who once held sway at the highest levels of Nigerian power.
The unjust detention has already cost Deborah dearly. Her daughter, who had been single handedly caring for her aged grandmother died recently after a prolonged illness.
“She had so much to carry. She was a single mother with two or three kids. The burden of taking care of the children, her sick grandmother, and worrying about her mother in prison was just too much,” a source familiar with the situation told SaharaReporters.
“She eventually fell ill and died. It was a slow, painful death, worsened by the hopelessness of it all.”
Sowore Slams Patience Jonathan, Says She Deserves Jail Over N750m Jewelry Scandal
written by Arabella Zikora
Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener Omoyele Sowore has argued that former First Lady Patience Jonathan should be imprisoned instead of her 15 domestic workers, who have been detained since 2019 over alleged missing jewellery valued at N750 million.
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported that in a blatant violation of Nigeria’s constitutional provisions on the presumption of innocence, the former First Lady has kept 15 of her domestic staff locked up in Bayelsa State’s Okaka Correctional Centre since 2019 over an unproven case of robbery.
Reacting to the matter, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) questioned where the former First Lady got the funds to buy jewelry valued at N750million.
Sowore in a post on his verified X social media account said, “Former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan has detained 15 domestic staff members for over six years while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing N750m worth of jewelry from her.
“Where did she get the funds to purchase jewelry valued at N750 million?”
Sowore said that Nigeria is the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they looted from the public treasury.
He said, “Nigeria appears to be the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they themselves looted from the public treasury.”
Vowing to get justice for the detained 15 domestic staff of the former First Lady, Sowore said, “We must do everything to get them released from unjustified prosecution. Patience Jonathan should be the one in prison.”
According to SaharaReporters, it had been gathered that these workers have been rotting behind bars without a court conviction, as their trial has been repeatedly stalled on the orders of the influential former First Lady.
Sources familiar with the case had raised the alarm, calling for urgent intervention to ensure justice for the detained workers.
Also, a relative of one of the detained domestic workers, speaking to SaharaReporters, said that in 2019, there was a case of breaking and entering in one of her apartments in Otuoke, and she decided to arrest all her workers—even though they were not working in that apartment at the time.
The prolonged detention of the workers is a breach of Nigeria’s constitutional guarantee of the presumption of innocence.
Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria explicitly states that every person accused of a criminal offence shall be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Furthermore, Section 35 guarantees the right to personal liberty and stipulates that no person shall be detained beyond a reasonable period without trial.
SaharaReporters had learnt that the detained staff’s case has been deliberately stalled in court, allegedly under the influence of Patience Jonathan.
Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, served as the First Lady of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 and as the Second Lady of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010.
Patience Jonathan Reportedly Holds 15 Domestic Staff in Jail for Five Years Over Jewelry Theft
written by Arabella Zikora
Former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Dame Jonathan, has been accused of locking up 15 of her domestic staff in Bayelsa State’s Okaka Correctional Centre since 2019 over an unproven case of robbery.
According to SaharaReporters, the workers have allegedly being rotting behind bars without a court conviction, as their trial has been repeatedly stalled on the orders of the influential former First Lady.
Sources who spoke to the aforementioned publication alleged that the current judge handling the case is dragging her feet on the orders of the Jonathan.
The source said, “Since 2019, former First Lady Patience Jonathan has locked up about 16 of her domestic staff in Okaka Prison for allegedly stealing her jewellery, without first allowing a competent court of law to try them and sentence them.
“Some years ago, TECH4JUSTICE was able to provide legal services for them, which they have been doing ever since. But since the current Chief Judge came on board, she has been deliberately dragging the case on Patience Jonathan’s instructions. She is a stooge of the former First Lady.”
Also, a relative of one of the detained domestic workers, told the publication that, “They are at Okaka Prison in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. They are 15 in number and have been in prison since 2019. They were domestic workers for the former First Lady, Patience Jonathan.
“In 2019, there was a case of breaking and entering in one of her apartments in Otuoke, and she decided to arrest all her workers—even though they were not working in that apartment at the time.
“Since then, there has been no evidence to prove the case in court, and the case is not proceeding. They keep saying they are waiting for witnesses to come forward until today.”
The names of the detained workers include Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Saabi Liman, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Williams Alami, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Waribobo, Salomi Reginald, Sunday Boma, Oba Golden, and Vivian.
“They are being charged with armed robbery, malicious damage, attempted murder, stealing, and so on. But there is no evidence! They are even going to court this morning (Thursday),” the source added.
