Abuja, Nigeria – As momentum builds toward the 2027 general elections, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has issued a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of misleading Nigerians with inaccurate economic data to cover up worsening living conditions.
In a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, July 28, Obi claimed the current administration is “overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics” instead of addressing the root causes of the country’s economic hardship.
Obi to Tinubu: “Na Statistics We Go Chop?” Now Nigeria Is One of the Hungriest Nations
Referencing comments made by Tinubu during the 2023 campaign season, Obi recalled a moment in Delta State when the then-APC presidential candidate ridiculed him for relying on statistics, famously saying:
“Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
Obi responded, noting that:
“Now, two years into his four-year term, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations globally. Millions of Nigerians don’t know where their next meal will come from.”
He accused President Tinubu of manipulating unemployment, inflation, and GDP figures to paint a falsely optimistic picture of the nation’s economy.
“Governance Is Not a Gamble,” Obi Says
Reinforcing his campaign message, Obi added:
“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
He stressed that Nigeria needs leadership rooted in data, empathy, and economic truth—not propaganda.
Calls for Obi to Avoid Returning to PDP
Meanwhile, Donald Okwuosa, a public administrator and political analyst, has cautioned Obi against rejoining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of 2027. Speaking in an exclusive interview, Okwuosa argued that the PDP is currently fractured and no longer a viable platform for reformist politicians.
“The PDP is in disarray. Their major financiers are now backing the ADC. Obi has nothing to gain by going back. His movement in 2023 under the Labour Party was organic and powerful. If he stays with LP, his influence—especially in the north—will only grow.”
Reno Omokri Criticizes Obi Over WAFCON Appearance
In a separate development, political commentator and former presidential aide Reno Omokri took a swipe at Obi for attending the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. Omokri argued that Obi’s presence could have distracted the Super Falcons, drawing comparisons to Nigeria’s missed opportunity to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Omokri, a consistent critic of Obi and vocal Tinubu supporter, has used every opportunity to downplay Obi’s public engagements and popularity.
As Nigeria inches closer to another defining election year in 2027, the political atmosphere is heating up. Obi’s latest critique adds to the growing debate over the Tinubu administration’s economic performance, while questions about party alignment, political strategy, and voter momentum continue to dominate national conversations.
