ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, has dismissed the reported impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, by the State House of Assembly, describing the move as an exercise in impunity that is bound to fail.
Reacting on her X handle on Thursday to comments by veteran journalist Reuben Abati, who questioned reports that former governor Nyesom Wike was allegedly present at the venue supervising the impeachment proceedings, Onochie said such an action, if true, would amount to the height of lawlessness.
Onochie recalled that a previous attempt to unseat Governor Fubara had collapsed despite political pressure, noting that the process failed because it did not meet constitutional requirements.
“They tried before. They failed,” she said, alleging that those behind the move had earlier sought the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, which led to what she described as an unconstitutional suspension of the governor.
According to her, the impeachment effort was doomed from the start because the Chief Judge of Rivers State, whose assent is required by law to validate impeachment proceedings, had refused to endorse it.
“Why did they fail before? It is required by law that the Chief Judge of the state must assent, but he declined to sign,” Onochie said. “Why will they fail again? It’s still the same Chief Judge.”
She accused the lawmakers involved of being “loyal to impunity and lawlessness,” arguing that such loyalty prevents them from acting with common sense or respect for due process.
Onochie concluded by predicting that the unfolding political drama would ultimately favour the people of Rivers State.
“The coming days are interesting,” she said. “The people of Rivers State will be free at last.”
