LAGOS- Archbishop Stephen Adegbite on Monday called for unity within the body of Christ to enhance its impact on society.
Adegbite is the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Welfare Commission(NCPC).
The cleric, who also serves as the Chaplain of the Aso Rock Chapel, made the call during the Centenary Anniversary Lecture of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church.
He emphasised that unity was essential in combating forces that posed a threat to Christianity and humanity.
The lecture, where Adegbite was the Guest Lecturer, was held at the University of Lagos to commemorate the Church’s 100 years of existence.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture had as its theme, “Centenary, Envisioned Future.”
In his lecture, Adegbite noted that the Cherubim and Seraphim Church was founded not merely as a denomination, but as an indigenous African voice within the Christian faith.
Its purpose, he said, was to promote African spiritual practices and offered an alternative to the growing influence of Western culture on Christian worship.
He highlighted that the church’s 100-year journey, since its founding by Baba Aladura Moses Orimolade in 1925, was a time for deep gratitude to God.
According to him, this centenary should also be a period of critical reflection and engagement.
He urged reforms that would revive the church’s original mandate of holiness and strengthen its African identity in worship, in order to resist the continued infiltration of foreign cultural norms into the christian faith.
He urged the Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) and other churches to unite in rejecting practices like same-sex relationships, which he described as foreign influences infiltrating the body of Christ.
He encouraged Africans to take evangelism to the West, noting that those who introduced christianity to Africa had since strayed from its true message.
He praised the C&S leadership for its well-structured succession plan that had sustained the organisation.
He called on them to revitalise its unique worship style—characterised by prophetic messages, visions, aggressive evangelism, and mountain retreats.
Earlier, the Supreme Head of the Church, His Eminence Solomon Adegboyega-Alao, stated that the church would implement reforms to enhance its societal impact over the next 100 years.(NAN)
