Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun has weighed in on the recurring flood crisis in Lagos, attributing it largely to the poor waste disposal habits of residents.
In a video shared on Instagram, Balogun lamented that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and drainage channels by residents worsens flooding in many parts of the city.
He recalled witnessing such acts in Maryland, where people were seen throwing trash directly into gutters, further compounding drainage problems.
According to him, while government has its role to play, residents must also take responsibility for the damage they constantly complain about.
Balogun said:
“We are the government, and we are the ones doing this to ourselves. Because they dumped refuse into the gutter, look at Ikorodu Road — people have blocked the gutters. We even saw some people at Maryland, but we couldn’t record it. Throwing dustbins into the gutter blocks the drainage.”
