Big Tech Giants ‘Competing With States’, Putin Warns After Russia Tells Internet Firms To Delete Posts Backing Navalny Protests

By Our Reporter Abuja (Precise Post) – Russian President Vladimir Putin today sounded a warning about the influence of global tech giants which he said were ‘competing’ with national governments, after Russia told internet firms to take down posts that had fuelled Alexei Navalny-inspired protests. Putin told the virtual Davos summit that tech companies were ‘not just economic giants… in some areas they are already de facto competing with the state’. ‘We just saw it all in the United States,’ he added, referring to the Capitol riot incited by Donald Trump which led to the then-president being banned from Twitter – a move which has caused disquiet in several European countries. Putin’s comments come as Russia ramps up pressure on the activities of foreign tech giants, which are not subject to the same state censorship as most media outlets. Moscow earlier this week accused US tech platforms of interfering in Russia’s internal affairs during the anti-government protests egged on by Navalny. Ahead of the Navalny rallies, Russia’s media watchdog Roskomnadzor ordered several online platforms, including YouTube and Instagram, to delete …

Fani-Kayode who took to his twitter handle to disclose this, warned that Nigerians supporting this mass censorship are simply cutting their noses to spite their faces. Adding that they have been blinded by their hate for Trump and are acting and thinking out of ignorance. He slammed those who argued, rather naively, that Twitter, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram are private companies with their own rules and regulations and if any of them bans or censors you, you can simply go elsewhere. Fani-Kayode reminded that principle of freedom of speech is universal and whether it is a private company or a Government that seeks to limit or censor it makes NO difference. Either way it is wrong. Private companies do NOT have the right to silence dissenting voices any more than Governments do. The tweets read: Apple has finally removed Parler whilst Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are now …
