Zambian minister resigns as video shows him receiving cash bribes from Chinese contractors

ZAMBIA- Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Stanley Kakubo, resigned on Wednesday after he was caught on tape receiving about $200,000 in cash and a Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle as a bribe from Chinese contractors. In the video, reportedly taken in 2022, the minister promised to sell rich mineral mines to Chinese businessmen. The video, however, surfaced after he failed to live up to the terms. The minister said he resigned because he didn’t want his controversy to distract President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, Lusaka Times reports. Mr Kakubo, however, vowed, “In due course, we will provide the accurate context surrounding the recent developments.” The president promptly accepted his resignation while appreciating his commendable contributions and leadership as a minister. Mr Kakubo’s scandal shows how prevalent bribery has become among African politicians. In 2015, judges were caught on camera receiving bribes in Ghana. In 2018, a Nigerian politician, Umar Ganduje, was caught on camera receiving bribes from public works contractors while serving as governor of Kano in the country’s North-West. He declined to resign from office and went on to …

Why price of cement is high ——-Dangote

The management of Dangote Cement Plc. says that the price of a bag of cement from its factories and plants in Obajana and Gboko is N2,450, and N2,510 at Ibese. Mr Devakumar Edwin, the company’s Group Executive Director in charge of Strategy, Portfolio Development and Capital Projects, stated this in a statement he made available to newsmen in Lokoja on Tuesday. He said that these were the prices of cement which included the Value Added Tax (VAT) as at April 12. According to him, the clarifications become necessary in view of the recent insinuations that the company sells cement in Nigeria at higher prices relative to how much it sells it in other countries, particularly in Ghana and in Zambia. ” While a bag of Cement sells for an equivalent of $5.1, including VAT in Nigeria, it sells for $7.2 in Ghana and $5.95 in Zambia ex-factory, inclusive of all taxes,” Edwin explained. He said that though, the company has direct control over its ex-factory prices, it cannot control the ultimate price of cement when it gets to the open …
