The agency also raised an alarm that the aim of armed groups has grown beyond making a profit, in a statement titled, “UNHCR is worried about the security situation in Africa and how it will effect Equatorial Guinea”, on Tuesday. According to the United Nations refugee agency, the number of refugees in Africa skyrocketed in recent years due to ongoing terrorist activity-related crises in Nigeria and Sahel. The agency also noted that 2020 witnessed the deadliest militant Islamist violence and upsurge in terrorist activity in the Sahel, West, and North Africa. Nigeria’s North-West and central states have been caught up in a surge in violence from heavily armed bandits who loot villages, steal cattle, and carry out mass kidnappings. University Admission – Schools To Decide Benchmarks As JAMB Cancels General Cut-off Marks

By Our Reporter Abuja – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Tuesday, cancelled general cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions and gave schools the freedom to set their individual minimum benchmarks for admission. The Board took the decision at the 2021 policy meeting, which was held virtually, and chaired by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. Speaking during the meeting, Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said, “Some universities such as the University of Maiduguri, proposed 150; Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, proposed 140; Pan Atlantic University proposed 210; University of Lagos 200; Lagos State University, 190; Covenant University 190; and Bayero University, Kano, 180. “Institutions have now been given the liberty to decide cut-off marks; there will be no cut-off marks [stipulation] from JAMB.” On the deadline for the closure of admissions, the stakeholders resolved to allow the education ministry to decide, as they could not agree on the December 31, 2021 deadline for all public institutions and January 31, 2022 for all private institutions. Publish Names, BVN Of Forex Defaulters – CBN Orders Banks

By Our Reporter Abuja – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all banks to publish names of customers who try to break the rules on Forex acquisition on their website. The CBN on Monday, August 30th issued a circular (BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/14/059) to all banks lamenting that it has “received and noted with concern reports of sharp practices by some unscrupulous customers to circumvent the new CBN policy on the sale of forex for overseas personal and business travel”. Some of the unwholesome practices, the CBN said: “include the use of fake visas and cancellation of air tickets after purchase of PTA/BTA”. Haruna B. Mustafa Director Banking Supervision Department of the CBN, who signed the circular, noted: “this trend, if not curbed, portends risk to the integrity and stability of the forex market”. THE Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has warned Nigerians to avoid the risk of taking herbal formulations after 14 days of preparations. Adeyeye explained that such measure was necessary for safety reasons, adding that such medicine should always be kept refrigerated. The NAFDAC DG, in a statement by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, further said, “After 14 days, if it is liquid, it may start to develop bacteria that can make people sick.” She also advised Nigerians to be careful in using herbal medicine to prevent avoidable death and complications. Enugu State Boxing Association, has decried the non-participation of Nigeria in boxing at the just-concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, in spite of the country’s pedigree in the sport. Chairman of the association, Ebere Amaraizu, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, in Enugu on Tuesday, on the way forward for boxing in the country.
