AKWA IBOM – Mrs Gift Udia, a farmer in Eket, Akwa Ibom, says she recently lost no fewer than 500 birds as a result of flooding in the area.
Udia told the newsmen in Eket on Friday that the flooding pushed down the fencing of the farm and got her birds submerged.
Recalls that a recent flooding that occured in Eket affected buildings and household property in Udok, Udofa, Essien Imoh, Idua and Almighty Roads.
“I woke up in the morning to find out that all 500 birds in my farm have died due to rain water that pushed down the fence and entered the farm,” she said.
She urged the state and federal emergency management agencies to come to her aid in order to cushion the effect of the loss.
Udia, a mother of four, said that the loss of birds had thrown her into debt, saying: ” I borrowed to establish the farm, I am left to repay loan without making any profit”
Also speaking, Mr Daniel Inyang, a resident of Udok Street, said that his house was submerged by the flood, and that he lost property worth millions of naira.
He said that three streets away from his house were all flooded and household items and food stuff were destroyed.
“I lost mattresses, beds, radio, television, chairs and tables. Even foodstuff and kitchen utensils were soaked in the flood, he said.
Inyang called on the relevant authorities to support families that were affected by the flood with relief material in order to cushion the effect of the damage.(NAN)
