ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Senate on Thursday confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a screening during its plenary session.
Precise Post recalls that Amupitan, a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who held the position for a decade.
He hails from Kogi State in Nigeria’s North Central region and currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
According to the statement released by the Special Adviser (Information and Strategy) to the President, Bayo Onanuga on his X handle, during his appearance before the Senate, Amupitan pledged to introduce technological innovations into the electoral process.
He revealed plans to deploy drones and collaborate with key institutions such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enhance the credibility and efficiency of elections in Nigeria.
Prof. Amupitan’s confirmation marks a new phase for the electoral body, as stakeholders look to him to steer reforms and strengthen democratic practices across the country.
