ENUGU (PRECISE POST) – Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah was delighted after the federal government officially selected the state as the location for the National Institute for Sports (NIS) South East Zonal Headquarters, a move hailed as a major recognition of the state’s growing reputation as a centre for sports excellence, peace, and hospitality.
Governor Mbah disclosed this on his X handle @PNMbah shortly after receiving the Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu,and his management team at the Government House, Enugu. Shaibu brought the announcement of the Federal Government’s decision, which the Governor described as “a cheering development and a vote of confidence in Enugu’s leadership and sporting heritage.”
“You have made the right choice by coming to Enugu,” Mbah said. “This city has produced champions and nurtured legends. For us, sports go beyond recreation — it’s a driver of social and economic growth, and we take it very seriously.”
The Governor pledged full support for the institute’s establishment, promising to provide office space, logistics, and institutional backing to ensure a smooth take-off of the zonal headquarters.
“This is not tokenism but service to our people,” Mbah added. “We are intentional about governance and remain committed to creating opportunities for young people to thrive — in sports, innovation, and enterprise.”
He noted that the new partnership complements the state’s ongoing efforts to upgrade key sporting facilities, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village, reinforcing Enugu’s position as the cradle of future champions.
“Tomorrow is here,” the Governor declared, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to turn Enugu into the sporting and youth development hub of the South East.
