ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, describing him as “an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors” of Nigeria’s creative spirit.
Atiku, in a condolence message posted on his X handle on Wednesday, said Jacobs’ death at the age of 84 represented a significant loss to Nigeria’s entertainment industry and the wider creative community.
He described the late actor as a familiar and commanding presence in the homes of generations of Nigerians, noting that his distinctive voice, dignity and acting talent made him part of the nation’s collective memory.
According to Atiku, Jacobs contributed significantly to the development of Nigeria’s film industry long before Nollywood gained global recognition.
He said the veteran actor helped lay the foundation for the growth of the industry through decades of dedication to his craft, adding that he “gave life to our stories, dignity to our culture and inspiration to countless younger actors.”
Atiku said Jacobs’ death would be deeply felt by a nation that watched and admired him over the years.
“The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him,” he said.
The former vice president extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the entire Jacobs family, praying that the memories of their life together would give them strength during the period of grief.
He also sympathised with the Nollywood community, the wider African creative industry and Jacobs’ admirers across the world.
“Olu Jacobs gave Nigeria his talent, his voice and a lifetime of excellence. Nigeria will remember him with pride, affection and profound gratitude,” Atiku said.
He prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul and comfort for his family.
