ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, has urged Nigerians to vote wisely in the 2027 presidential election, stressing that the power to change the country’s fortunes lies with the electorate.
Agbakoba, in a message posted on his X handle on Wednesday, expressed concern over the state of politics in the country, saying Nigerians must be more deliberate in choosing their leaders if they want improved living conditions.
He identified rising food prices, inadequate healthcare, a struggling education system and limited employment opportunities, particularly for the growing youth population, as some of the major challenges confronting the country.
According to him, although there are only about 10,000 politicians serving a population of roughly 220 million Nigerians, the electorate possesses the power to determine who occupies positions of authority through their votes.
He, however, questioned whether Nigerians truly exercise that power, arguing that voters often surrender the value of their votes without fully appreciating the consequences of their choices.
Agbakoba said once citizens give away their votes, elected politicians could make decisions that run contrary to the interests and aspirations of the people, leaving the electorate to bear the consequences.
He therefore advised Nigerians to approach the 2027 presidential election with greater vigilance and carefully assess the candidates before casting their ballots.
The legal practitioner said the choice of a presidential candidate should not be based on where the candidate comes from or physical appearance, but on the individual’s capacity to provide disciplined leadership, inspire meaningful change and improve the lives of Nigerians.
He stressed that Nigerians possess the power to influence the country’s future, adding that such change begins with making informed and responsible choices at the ballot box.
