Abeokuta Hospital Moves To Transfer Worker Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Student Nurses

by Arabella Zikora

The allegations reportedly concern incidents involving student nurses from the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, who were undertaking clinical training at FMC Abeokuta.

The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State, is reportedly considering the transfer of a staff member, identified as Ajayi Adebowale Alaba, to the facility’s Joga-Orile annex following allegations that he sexually assaulted student nurses of the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences during their clinical posting at the hospital.

A source familiar with the development told SaharaReporters that the proposed transfer has raised concerns among some individuals familiar with the matter, who fear that moving Ajayi to another facility could prevent a proper investigation into the allegations against him.

The source explained that the management of FMC Abeokuta was planning to transfer Ajayi to Joga Orile Health Centre, an annex established by the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, describing the proposed move as an attempt to shield him from scrutiny over the allegations.

“The report getting to me now is that the HNS (Head of Nursing Services), FMC Abeokuta, is planning to transfer the staff member, Mr Ajayi Adebowale Alaba, to Joga-Orile, which is an FMC annex, just to cover up the atrocities the said man has committed,” the source told SaharaReporters.

The allegations reportedly concern incidents involving student nurses from the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, who were undertaking clinical training at FMC Abeokuta.

However, Ajayi, when contacted by SaharaReporters, did not directly confirm or deny the allegations.

Instead, he said he had been instructed to consult a psychiatrist over a health problem.

Ajayi said he had been advised by people at the hospital to seek specialist medical attention, explaining that he was trying to see a doctor regarding his health.

“They said I should go and see the doctor. If there is something that… I’m trying to see the doctor concerning my health issues,” he said.

When SaharaReporters asked him specifically to clarify whether the allegations of sexual assault against him were true, Ajayi struggled to give a definitive response.

“Actually, it is something that… I can’t say it. I can’t say it. It has not happened either. But I don’t even know. Sir, I don’t even know, to God who made me. Those girls have their own destinies, I can’t lie against them,” he said.

He then appealed for assistance, saying, “So, please, sir, if there is any help you can do for me, sir, please, sir. To God who made me, sir.”

SaharaReporters subsequently asked Ajayi whether reports that he was being transferred to Joga-Orile were true.

He confirmed that discussions were ongoing concerning the move, but explained that he had also been trying to see a specialist at the facility.

“Yes, sir. It’s not like… They are working on it very soon because I wanted to see the consultant of that place, but I never saw the consultant because of the strike,” he said.

Ajayi added that doctors at the facility had already spoken with him and advised him to see the consultant.

“Because of the industrial action, there are some doctors there. They have seen me, asking me how things are. They said I need to see the consultant very soon. So today, now, I am going there. I’m hearing that the strike is on again,” he said.

When asked whether the matter was related to a medical condition, Ajayi responded, “Yes.”

SaharaReporters then asked him whether the consultant he was expected to see was a psychiatrist.

“Yes, sir,” he replied.

The development comes amid concerns over the safety and welfare of student nurses undergoing clinical postings in healthcare facilities, where they are expected to receive practical training under professional supervision.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, had petitioned the management of the FMC, Abeokuta, over two separate allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate sexual conduct involving student nurses during their clinical posting at the hospital.

The complaints, contained in a formal report dated September 25, 2026, were submitted to the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, through the Head of Clinical Services, Director of Nursing Services and Head of the Education Unit.

The formal report was signed by Comrade Odedoyin M.A., Executive President of the SUG; Senator Muhammed A.S., Senate President; and Senator Agemo A., Deputy Senate President, on behalf of the Student Union Government of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta.

Copies of the report were also addressed to the Provost of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, and the Director, School of Nursing, Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta.

The SUG said the complaints arose from incidents involving hospital personnel at the Male Medical Ward on September 23 and 24, 2026.

According to the students’ union, the affected students personally brought the allegations to its attention and provided individual accounts of the incidents.

The union said it decided to formally document and escalate the complaints because of the seriousness of the allegations and the need to ensure that students undertaking clinical training are provided with a safe environment.

One of the complaints was made by Okonkwo Goodness Chinecherem, a student of the Ogun State College of Nursing, who explained that she was subjected to inappropriate sexual conduct during her night duty at the Male Medical Ward on September 24, 2026.

According to her account, she was sleeping during her break when the male porter Mr. Ajayi approached her and touched her without her consent.

She further stated that the porter subsequently attempted further inappropriate sexual contact.

“According to her account, while she was sleeping during her break, a male porter identified as Mr. Ajayi approached her and touched her buttocks without her consent,” the petition said.

“She further reported that he subsequently attempted to insert his finger into her vagina. She stated that the incident caused her significant shock, fear and emotional distress and made her feel unsafe in the clinical environment.

The student said the incident left her shocked, frightened and emotionally distressed and made her feel unsafe within the clinical environment.

The second complaint was submitted by Aminu Olulabikunmi, another student of the Ogun State College of Nursing, concerning an incident she said occurred during her clinical posting at the Male Medical Ward on September 23, 2026.

According to Aminu’s account, she did not have access to a designated bed during her break period.

She said that a male worker, later identified as Mr Ajayi, offered his bed to her so she could rest while he slept elsewhere within the ward.

The student said that while she was asleep, the same male worker later returned and lay beside her on the bed.

She explained that the worker covered her body with a cloth and subsequently made an inappropriate advance towards her.

According to her account, she immediately stopped the alleged conduct and got out of the bed.

Aminu reportedly told the SUG that she considered the circumstances surrounding the offer of the bed and the subsequent conduct inappropriate, particularly because she was asleep and therefore in a vulnerable situation.

“She expressed the belief that the circumstances surrounding the initial offer of the bed and the subsequent conduct were inappropriate and occurred while she was in a vulnerable state,” the petition said.
