Umuahia (PRECISE POST) — Political momentum is gathering in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as influential leaders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas have urged Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to enter the governorship race.
The call, seen as part of a broader political alignment within one of Abia’s most strategic blocs, was made during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of Chief Uzoma Ihuka’s intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the statement signed by the SA Press Affairs to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Udora Orizu, made available to Precise Post on Thursday, Community leaders at the event openly endorsed Kalu as their preferred candidate, signaling growing grassroots support for his potential candidacy.
Addressing the gathering, Kalu praised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a unifying force that has strengthened the APC nationwide. He contrasted this with opposition parties, which he said continue to grapple with internal crises, while the APC remains focused on delivering development.
He added that the current level of progress under the APC-led federal government represents only a fraction of what lies ahead, particularly for Abia State.
The event also witnessed a wave of defections, notably from the Labour Party, as new members cited renewed confidence in the APC’s leadership and direction. The defectors were formally received into the party, boosting its grassroots presence in the Isiala Ngwa axis.
Kalu assured both old and new members of inclusive governance, emphasizing a commitment to community engagement and practical solutions aimed at improving livelihoods.
Responding to repeated calls for his governorship bid, the Deputy Speaker acknowledged the growing support from across the state, including Bende and Obingwa, but stopped short of making a formal declaration.
“I have received your request,” Kalu told supporters, “but I will respond in the coming days. I want to address all Abians collectively.”
He stressed that any official announcement would be made in Umuahia, the state capital, in line with constitutional and political tradition.
Kalu revealed plans to invite stakeholders from across Abia to converge in Umuahia, where he would give a definitive response to the mounting calls.
Precise Post recalls that the event concluded on a note of optimism, underscored the party unity and a growing perception of APC’s rising influence in the state ahead of 2027.
