Amid Protests Over FESTAC Demolitions, Lagos Government Says ‘Not Us’

The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the recent demolition of buildings in FESTAC Town, distancing itself from reports circulating on social media.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, made the clarification on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the state secretariat in Alausa.

Olumide stated that the state government was not responsible for the demolitions, stressing that Lagos follows a transparent and lawful process before any structure is pulled down.

“We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights,” Olumide said.

He explained that the government typically issues all statutory notices and engages with affected parties before carrying out any demolition exercise.

The commissioner urged all agencies operating within Lagos—especially federal bodies—to seek proper clearance and consult with the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before embarking on demolition activities.

“Any demolitions carried out without proper authorisation do not reflect the position or practice of this administration,” he added.

The clarification comes amid rising public concern over the demolition of some structures in FESTAC Town, with residents questioning which authority ordered the exercise.
