Abuja (Precise Post) – Technical Director of Athletics Federation of Nigeria Samuel Onikeku is happy and elated towards the athletes that are giving their best and getting ready for various Athletics events especially the Commonwealth coming up in July.
He stated this while having a chat with Journalists in Abuja during the All Comers athletics event held recently where he attested that so athletes were discovered as well as time finishing improved. He equally stated that with this event. Athletes who prove themselves will be invited to camp to prepare for various up coming events such as the African championship, World championship and Commonwealth.
“The objective for these event have been achieved at the All Comers athletics event. Everything went well. So many athletes have been discovered. We will soon be inviting athletes to camp as soon as the technical committee selects them, we will release their names by Monday.
Most of these athletes have met the standard to qualify for Commonwealth which I am happy. So many of them will go to African Championship first, because the competition comes up on the 8th to 12th of June. So we’ve selected those athletes that will go for the championship, soon their names will be released. Afterwards we will now know the final athletes, after the trials that will make it to Commonwealth.
There is still room for improvement for some of these athletes to improve on their time finishing. Like the 400meters race lots of the women are now running 52-53 minutes which was very difficult before, for the men lots of them finished 46minutes. So we are coming up. He concluded.
