Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, have visited the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari to offer their condolences.
Naija News reports that the visit took place on Wednesday morning at Buhari’s residence in Daura, Katsina State, where the late president was laid to rest on Tuesday following his death in London on Sunday after a brief illness.
During the visit, Peter Obi was seen consoling Buhari’s daughters, while Atiku Abubakar and El-Rufai proceeded to the late president’s gravesite to offer prayers.
The visit underscores the respect and national significance attached to Buhari’s legacy, as Nigeria mourns the passing of the former military ruler and civilian president.
Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, reflected on his personal interactions with Buhari after he left office in 2023. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the burial ceremony, Radda shared candid advice the late president gave him about leadership.
“After he left office in 2023, he spent about two years in Daura. During that time, I was fortunate to interact with him more frequently,” Radda recounted. “He always said, ‘Your Excellency, do your best and be honest as a leader. You cannot satisfy Nigerians; only God can do that.’”
Radda described Buhari as a humble and humorous figure who often made him laugh despite the weight of his past responsibilities.
“He said he suffered a lot, but now he felt like a free man, relieved from the burden of leadership,” Radda added.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was remembered for his efforts to fight corruption and reposition the country’s economy, despite criticisms of some of his policies.
The visit by prominent national figures like Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai reflects the late president’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s political landscape.
