ABUJA (PRECISE POST) –  The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged federal and state lawmakers to remain committed as the ongoing constitution amendment process enters its concluding phase.

Speaking on Monday at a joint meeting of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Constitution Review with the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, held at Abuja Continental Hotel, Barau said the gathering was aimed at consolidating agreements already reached and receiving final reports from subcommittees.

Barau recalled that lawmakers earlier met in Lagos to debate the bills under consideration before adjourning for further consultations. He commended their dedication to what he described as a “very important legislative activity” designed to help build a more secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria.

He noted that Monday’s meeting would not be heavily deliberative, except in cases where any previously concluded issue required reconsideration.

According to him, the focus is to formally endorse earlier resolutions and receive inputs from subcommittees handling specific issues, including state and local government creation.

Barau emphasized the strategic role of State Houses of Assembly in the constitution alteration process, noting that the meeting was also designed to fully brief and integrate state lawmakers before the final report is presented to the National Assembly plenary.

He said the interaction would give state assemblies the opportunity to make observations ahead of the transmission of bills that meet the Section 9 constitutional threshold.

The Deputy Senate President urged participants to stay committed to ensuring that all eligible bills are forwarded to state legislatures before the end of the year.

He thanked attendees and expressed optimism for a successful conclusion of deliberations.
