Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.
The news was confirmed in a Facebook post by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, who revealed that Diri resigned alongside the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP members in the state legislature.
Diri’s resignation marks a significant political shift in Bayelsa and has fueled speculation about his potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Alabrah’s statement did not specify the governor’s next political move.
Sources told The Punch that the announcement was made during the weekly State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday. It was also gathered that Diri has submitted his resignation letter to the PDP.
Reports indicate that members of the State Executive Council also resigned alongside the governor, signaling a collective political realignment in the state.
When contacted, Alabrah declined to comment further, saying, “I cannot talk now.”
Similarly, efforts to reach the state PDP Chairman, Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.
Diri’s departure from the PDP comes amid increasing political tension ahead of the next election cycle and could reshape the political landscape in the oil-rich Niger Delta state.
