CALABAR- Some school children in Cross River, have expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the 2025 Children Day celebration by the state government.
The school children who came from different parts of the state for the event on Tuesday, were disallowed entry into the UJ Esuene Stadium by police personnel.
Although no reason was given by security personnel for the cancellation, the development left the school children and officials highly disappointed.
Josephine Abang, a Junior Secondary School 1 Student, said that she and others came to the stadium to participate in the children’s day event after several weeks of rehearsals.
“The cancellation is a surprise to us, this is an event of the children, it should be taken seriously, we are the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.
Another student, Kufre Mbufe, described the unannounced cancellation of the event as unfair and discouraging.
“This development has left me wondering if truly any importance is attached to our future,” he said.
Mrs Uduak Bassey, a teacher who brought children for the event, expressed worries that no notice was given for the cancellation.
“We have always had the children’s day celebration at this stadium. You can see the number of school children here.
“The authorities ought to have sent notice across, the time and resources spent to come here would have been saved,” she said.
NAN reports that the school children and their teachers spent several hours without gaining access into the stadium before a cancellation notice was released by the state government.
The notice which was sent from the office of the Chief of Protocol, Government House, however gave no reason for the cancellation.
When contacted for reasons, Mr Erasmus Ekpang, the Information Commissioner, said that the matter was not within the purview of his office.(NAN)
