The Vice Chancellor of the University, Muhammad Abdulazeez, while presenting the hand sanitizers on Thursday in Bauchi, said they were produced and branded in the institution.
He said the university produced the hand sanitizers as part of its efforts to curb the Convid-19 pandemic.
Abdulazeez said the university made the donation considering that the inmates and the community needed attention.
He said the university management considered the importance of meeting the needs of the inmates who are Nigerians despite the fact that they are in incarceration.
“From our findings, nothing much has been done to protect the inmates from the COVID-19 infection.
“We are the first to do that and we have plans to sustain this partnership we have just started,” he said
The VC said the university and the management of the center would establish a synergy in other facets.
He said the exercise was in line with the cardinal objectives of the university, which are teaching, research and community service.
“What we have done today is our community service responsibility,” he said
In his remarks, Alhaji Rilwanu Sulaiman, the Emir of Bauchi, appreciated the ATBU management for the gesture.
He said curbing the spread of the pandemic was the responsibility of everybody.
Also speaking, the Controller of Bauchi Medium Correctional Center, Deputy Comptroller, Sulaiman Inuwa, thanked the ATBU management for the move, saying it was timely as the inmates too needed attention like other Nigerians.
He assured that the items would be judiciously used for the purpose intended.
Inuwa called on well-to-do individuals in the society and organizations, to contribute their quota in checking the spread of COVID-19 in the country. (NAN)
