ASABA – The Delta government on Sunday welcomed 16-year-old autistic cyclist, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, during a brief stop in Asaba on his endurance journey.
Kanyeyachukwu, from Enugu State, arrived with his parents, Kanyeyachukwu Autism Foundation members, cycling officials, and a medical support team.
The visit formed part of his long-distance ride from Enugu through Anambra, with Lagos as the final destination.
At the Government House, the cyclist and his entourage were received by the Governorâs wife, Mrs Tobore Oborevwori.
Also present were senior officials, including Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Assembly member, Mrs Bridget Anyafulu, and Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ms Pat Ajudua.
Mrs Oborevwori described the visit as âboth inspiring and symbolic,â praising Kanyeyachukwuâs courage and determination.
She noted his endurance ride, âRide with Kanye,â aims to raise awareness about autism.
âHis achievements, including recognition in the Guinness World Record, highlight his talents in the arts and passion for cycling,â she said.
The governorâs wife emphasised that the visit aligned with her âYou Matter Charity Foundationâ, promoting inclusion and recognising every individualâs value.
âThis event celebrates excellence, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit, not merely a young person with special needs,â she added.
She said Kanyeyachukwuâs story âreflects potential to inspire and positively influence society,â assuring him of continued support from her foundation.
Oborevwori commended his parents for dedication and belief in his abilities, expressing optimism for future milestones, including a possible Guinness World Record return.
The SSG highlighted the significance of the You Matter initiative, noting it actively supports individuals excelling in spite of challenges.
âHis journey is a clear example of the impact of such support,â Emu said, praising the teenâs parents amid Nigeriaâs limited facilities for special needs children.
He reiterated the state governmentâs commitment to backing awareness campaigns and social advocacy initiatives, citing similar long-distance cycling efforts for cancer awareness.
Chief Chuck Nduka-Eze, patron of the Autism Foundation, called Kanyeyachukwuâs story âdeeply inspiring,â noting his artistic talent emerged at age three.
âHe created the worldâs largest artistic painting thanks to family encouragement,â Nduka-Eze said, stressing neglect could have hindered his achievements.
He added the teenagerâs cycling challenge could make him one of the youngest to complete an Enugu-to-Lagos journey.
Kanyeyachukwuâs father expressed gratitude to the state government and M
the governorâs wife for the warm reception, describing her as compassionate and committed to vulnerable groups.
Reports the visitâs highlight was the presentation of a symbolic N10 million cheque supporting Kanyeyachukwuâs advocacy and ongoing journey. (NAN)
